black and white painting?

Has anyone seen or can generously provide links to any black and white painted minis?

I\'m considering asking for a mini to be painted in the style of an old news paper but have no idea if it\'s another of my bad ideas or could actually work.

If you think it\'s a good or bad idea, please let me know what you think and why as I have no idea.

@Joe : both Thomas and me used black, white, and various greys. If you\'re going for an old newspaper style then I think some browns should be use too.

Cheers Ritual... I like the one by green stuff more I think as it\'s a true monochrome... I think the emperors champion has a little colour in it.

What are your thoughts on them personally? do you think it works well or is it a little gimmicky or do you think there should be colour?

Having seen Thomas\' version first hand, it\'s absolutely brilliant. The color you see comes from the pic.

As for monochrome in itself, I view it as a technical chalenge on use of light, but it can also be used for dramatic story telling like requyem\'s Sin City scene :

I think it works well both completely monochrome, or with a slight coloured tint. I picked these two because I\'ve seen both of them IRL, and they look good in hand and not just in photos.

An important thing to consider (and if you hire someone to do this for you you should make sure they know too) is to use different tones to mimic different \"real colours\". If you paint everything going from black to white in basically the same way it\'s going to look like everything on the mini has the same colour (if it wasn\'t black and white). So, to get a bit of difference in appearance of different surfaces you must vary how much of different tonal intervals you use.

A black, or dark, surface, for instance, would have lots of dark tones and very small highlights with a rather abrupt transition to the light tones.

A white, or very light area would be the opposite.

Different colours would be dominated by varying amounts of mid-tones.

Aye that SC one is a more artistic (and true comicbook) appraoch to a mini and works so well. But when I think of monochromatic minis I think of that Emperor\'s Champ everytime.

I remember seeing a tank diarama here with half of it being in b&w and the other half being in color.

No luck in searching yet.

@Joe : can you tell us something about the mini you want to be painted in a monochromatic style? Will it get a scenic base? Is it a character mini?

The trouble with monochromatism is that you can\'t play on color to make it \"pop\" easily. So the choice of the mini, or working up the base is important IMHO.

There was a picture on CMoN of some copplestone gangsters done in black and white, with a manhattan backdrop.

In the description the fella has said he had picked colour schemes for everything, did some swatches in photoshop of shadow/mid/highlights of each colour then converted in to B&W, so you get the right shades and tones for each colour.

@Tim : Next time you go to Sweden, try to stop by Sven\'s place ;). By the way Sven, when are you going to treat us with a pic of your ever growing mini collection :drool:?

Green stuff: just really the steps of 10 downing street with a bit of railing and the standard iconic black door and number 10.

of course, making it all look like it should is always going to be the problem.

Sounds good :). If you can, get it mounted on a black plinth so that it gives more height to the piece and so that a plate can be add (something like a date or a place always helps to set the story). And if you really want to give it that newspaper feeling you were talking about at the top, instead of a plate, you could have a newspaper page with a big front page title. Something like \"End of War!\" or \"Peace!\". Just a thought ;).
