black brown colour theory

Hey guys and gals,
I am messing around with the idea of doing some minis in a scheme using black and browns going into white and cream but am having a really tough time planning out how to go about it. not much i have read about colour theory really mentions these colours much. Been thinking of adding in tints of green or maybe a turquoise to add some variation. I would like to keep the scheme pretty muted and dark. I also hope to do some freehand designs based around the work of hr giger integrated into the scheme. (can you guess i have been watching alien recently). This is for a wraith themed eldar force i am doing and think it would be a refreshing change to see some dark and menacing eldar rather than the usual bright primary schemes you see. Any of you familiar with the secret weapon corpse field bases will get a insight to my intentions for the feel i am going for as I have chosen these as the bases for the whole force.

Basically any input on this would be much appreciated.

Sounds pretty close to what you are trying to do. She posted a tutorial over on chest of colors. It might be worth taking a look at. As I recall, it was pretty detailed.

That cloak is exactly the sort of thing i am aiming for. Will have to give that article a good read. Dont really look on CoC very often. Found that the crowd there isnt to my liking so tend to avoid it but seems it was the perfect place to look on this occasion.
That bust is pretty nice too.
what do you guys think about introducing the green or turquoise?

That's a good example of the problem with lots of published writing about colour theory. Many guides actually don't mention brown except in passing, or in such a way that it doesn't actually tie it into the colour theory at all - with the result that even people who have read a lot about it can still not be aware what hue browns are.

Browns are basically orange in hue in case you haven't read that elsewhere. Knowing this verbally/intellectually can help a bit with sorting out what your eyes are seeing, but browns still vary a lot and as with some other duller colours they can be hard to 'pin down' as a result (the more dull the harder this is).

What exactly were you hoping for in terms of theory, what colour the highlights should be? There's no one answer to this unfortunately because it depends on what you want. Although there's some helpful stuff I can pass on really you need to resort to the tried-and-true method go with what looks right.

One thing I would strongly caution when working with browns and greys is not to get caught up in notions of 'colour temperature' as it can really be unhelpful.
