Black & White highlighting

I have seen somewhere somebody effectively took a color and just using black and white added to that color, ended up with a well shaded/highlighted mini.

Has anybody tried this with success or have any info on it?

I amgine a good way of doing this would be to find an example of a normally painted figure you like and change it to monochrome in a paint program to use a reference for YOUR version
