Blood Raven Scout

Hey guys! Finally got my Scout done after a few solid days of work on him. Probably one of the lengthier projects I\'ve done recently, lots of new techniques I was trying for the first time.

The face was also a problem, the sculpt looked fine but gave me much trouble once I actually went to paint it. I dunno the nose and mouth didn\'t seem \"right\" to me somehow, it took a lot of fiddling with the shadows to get something I was happy with. I know a lot of other people have had issues with the Scout heads and maybe they weren\'t exaggerating lol

Anyway the pics!

Two images, the latter with more angles. I had to show off the rope since it took so long to paint :p Making smooth cords look like real textured rope isn\'t fun at all, but it looks good when I actually invest the time I think.

If he wins a local GW qualifier, then he\'ll be taken down to Games Day Canada next weekend. There weren\'t many entries so I think my chances are good for getting to the real competition :) I also entered my Warrior Priest for Fantasy, sadly my Celeborn didn\'t get done. He\'s almost done in only a few hours though, so it\'s nice to see I can still get some work done fast once in a while ;)

If you have any questions, comments, critique, etc. I\'d love to hear it all!

Fantastic work Jericho, one of my favourite\'s of your work. The only thing i could think of is that the legs could have been taken a few highlights further?
Also, it would be great to know the recipe for your skin, i too am having the same troubles with the new scout heads, the lips and nose just dont seem to work.

Good luck with GD,
SirJD

Looks good Dan. I got my guy in at kingsway, virtually no competition though (other than Tom). I like how you managed to work the face (they really suck), my only criticism would be that he almost looks a little cross eyed (maybe angle of the picture?). Let us know if he\'s gonna make the trip to GD.

I think the nose is cutting off some of the white of the other eye lol He looked normal from head-on. I dunno they might not be perfect, I suck at eyes.

I didn\'t get a call about the qualifier yet, so I don\'t know if that\'s a good thing or a bad thing. There were only a couple entries when I dropped mine off so I still think there\'s a good chance he\'ll be heading down to Toronto.

i hate the way the eyes on the new scouts are too close together. you have done a great job with a so-so mini

Yep, good job, these plastic scouts are really pretty poor material, but you\'ve made him more than presentable.
The heads and hands are the worst parts, I find it helps the overall appearence if you take the jaw line down with a file, stops the rest of the features looking so small and cramped together in the centre of the face. those jaws are way to big.
Good job

The jaws are big, I do plan on cutting them down slightly on the other figures where they\'re a bit more prominent... but overall I think the faces aren\'t quite as bad as I thought judging by the studio pics. I don\'t often criticize the \'Eavy Metal paintjobs but the Black Templar ones especially on the box have brutal faces. They look like leatherfaced old men with no teeth...

Ahem. Anyway I might do up a whole squad of these guys at some point, the color scheme was fun to work with. We\'ll see, at the moment I\'m having a hard time getting too excited about anything.

For the first time this week I actually considered the whole \"Hey I could probably make a ton of money selling all my unpainted stuff on eBay, and I could probably free up a lot of spare time by ditching the hobby altogether.\"

It\'s been a bad week for hobby related shenanigans. I really don\'t want to deal with painting contests, tournaments, or anything else GW-related anymore... every time I get excited about the hobby something they do kicks me in the side of the head and makes me regret getting excited in the first place.

I think this week saw the death of the eternal GW optimist in me :p

I\'d watch what you let go of on ebay, I drifted out of painting minis for over ten years, only toget back into it, it\'s not like it has to be all or nothing.
I guess the problem is that it\'s a time consuming and fairly obsessive hobby, that doesn\'t combine to well with other social activities, relationships and work.
Just let it come and go, although be a shame to see you disappear, I like your stuff.:)

Get some stuff from other companys...expand your horizons lol

But seriously don\'t sell all your gear, save some and just pack it away, you never know, you may come back to the hobby in a few month, or a few year.

I don\'t really think I\'ll drop out of the hobby (temporarily or permanently) just yet, I just got super frustrated. How I could go from eagerly anticipating my next year or two\'s projects (and purchases) last week to being so completely disgusted with the hobby this week was a pretty big surprise tho :p

I have some Privateer Press figs, I\'ve painted some stuff by SJB, Newbold World, Artizan, Andrea, Confrontation, etc. over the years (Black Scorpion and Dark Rune (Jakob\'s, whatever he calls it!) are on the must-try list) but I don\'t enjoy the look, feel and background of anything as much as the GW stuff. And yet they still manage to get under my skin all the time by having good ideas for events, but even the staff running them don\'t know what\'s happening half the time.

I too have been harbouring major anger against games workshop lately, I bought three landspeeders, and all of them had problems with them, so I ring them up, and I have to ring england, not france, cause if you dont speak good enough french they just hang up on you.

Anyway, I ring up england, and they say, yes, we\'ll send you some new ones, and I get a nice little box in the mail a few days later, with three packs of epic landspeeders, so I thought, hey, what the hell, these are free, I may as well put them together, to find theres bits missing out of those too.

Along with a heap of other stuff I wont go into cause I got told off for yelling at who ever answered the phone in the mailing department.

Kind of like the \'Eavy Metal team then....

Hey man I\'ve had nothing but amazing experiences talking to \'Eavy Metal members (and former members for that matter) over the years. Jakob Neilsen, Darren Latham, and Tammy Haye just off the top of my head. All great people that I\'m very glad to know.

Lots of them post here too so be warned.

Anyway... most of my issues with GW involve policy and not people or even products. Very different issues.
