^^^^My question on the above, in case you haven't seen previous page: Should I stick with this standard on his dark armor. It's blackish blue with small bright highlights. OR should I go with my normal steel NMM recipe, with equal parts black gray and white, and then glaze over with purple and turqoise??? Not sure I like it how it is...

Right, thank you. I am sticking with the dark armor, just using a different process than I used in the above pic to attain it. I've had trouble with dark gradients because it is difficult to jump from black to white with little or no mid tone, over a short area. So I solve this by doing close to my normal gray gradient, with dark medium and light taking up around the same space. However, I'll have the dark take up a little more space than normal, with the mid and light taking up comparatively less area too. Then finally, I take a dark blue (S75 Abyssal Blue) and glaze over both the dark and medium areas. This makes a smooth dark gradient that jumps quickly from dark to light. Cheers.

YEAH! That gold looks really good. Getting the balance on the yellow is tough. That looks like iconic GW gold. Nicely done. Looking forward to see how you tackle the blue steel. I think you are on the right track.: paint gradients from black to white, then add color glaze.

Blue steel is my favorite look The last time I used it was when all of my friends perished in an accidental gasoline fight.
Painting is coming along very very slow, partly because work is very busy right now, also because I have been painting the base to my last project. But here is an update anyway:

Thanks a ton gentlemen. I've always had steel down but I am still so darn floored that I have cracked the code on gold. It was all about that Snakebite Leather, all along. By the way, since this paint is discontinued, a suitable alternative is two parts XV-88 mixed with about 1 part Balor Brown. I figured this out long ago but didn't know I had it right until I actually got my hands on some SB.
Ive been tempted to paint a figure in almost all gold NMM. Andy and Lee are both doing this right now, and I want to play too! Anyone got any ideas of a good figure for almost all gold? Wouldn't mind a Rackham fig...
@ Bailey- Oh no, I still need to learn the art of metallic painting. I'd really like to take a fantasy figure in full plate and test out my TMM. I just want to take some steel and glaze some VMC smoke and VMC Red Black and orange brown, etc over top of it. I've been craving this experience, actually. Never done it but it sounds fun. Kinda like crack, ya know?
@ Demi- I've already glazed on a few layers of SC Abyssal Blue, a very dark blue, on the dark parts of the armor. Perhaps I need to add a bit of a lighter blue to make it stand out more.
Not really sure what to do with him when done, as this mini was never really planned, I just started painting him one day. Maybe I'll just put him on a simple gaming base with the potential to be ranked up for a squad entry somewhere. Or perhaps this is a good figure for my long planned "Chaos Sled" pulled by slavering chaos hounds (not GW type).

That's looking very shiny BOK, I think there is a little room left for more pure white, but it's, optional I guess. Faceplate is about as good as a face should be.
Don't trap yourself into thinking there is only one way to do things, although the SBL recipe is a proven winner, im sure there are other ways to picture really nice NMM gold.

from R not really, unless you go for the same figure as Teneb. , some armored Griffin (Aerth for example) or a Pulsar/Nova from Cynwall.
From other lines:
- take any metal golems for example. Reaper has a few that look good.
- There is also a metallic figure from McVey, that you could paint gold instead of chrome. (even sennm gold if you fancy it)
or just generally take any figure from any line and paint them up as a gold statue.

All very good advise that is very much appreciated. @ GreenOne- I completely agree that one shouldn't count too much on a single recipe. I want to get comfortable with a a more buttery gold, and also a red gold.
@MaxxX-Thanks for the info, especially that SENMM from McVey. I do not wanna do any statues, just a lot of metals on armors, preferably.
In other news, I have a conversion project that I've been wanting to do for some time. It's a Chaos Sled pulled by some nasty hounds. I will scratch build the sled. And here is our villain, converted from a Dwarf Slayer and Chaos Lord. Thoughts on this???

Neat, I like that head on the chaos lord's body. When it comes to painting, I'd avoid doing red hair... pretty much all the dwarf versions of the figure have red hair, so I think it would be best to do something different. I look forward to seeing the sled and chaos hounds
