Maxxx and Bailey' advice seems spot on. And I think you are being too hard on yourself. You keep painting great stuff and improving even if it doesn't always match what is in your head. I envy your courage to tackle Bohun type freehand. If you haven't already, you should check out Flunk's WIP as he does some pretty awesome freehand patterns as well.

Yep I'd agree with Bailey et al on trying Bohun style freehand - aim for simple first, and keep practicing. I think the pale skin looks good so far by the way.

On the whole 'not going too dark on the skin' thing, I think it's best to just go for what the mini demands. I've seen excellent pale flesh in the WIPs etc, but even Bohun is going through a very dramatic almost black phase, so do whichever feels right.

Canvas looks great so far. Very expressive.

Thank you all for the kind words. It is good to know that others struggle through with dissatisfaction just like myself. Do you guys like the dark skin tone I've got going? I think I finally have settled on it. I like the look, personally, and I am happy to say I invented the tone all on my own.

Going to try something out on his dispenser straps...I think you all will like it.

Anyone have any idea, with the dark skin tone I am using (right leg) what color I could use to add accents on his face? I want him to look angry as hell....also a good shade tone to compliment? Obviously red, maybe brown red...

I think I like the right leg with the darker skin more on this figure.

For shades... shade color with more DarkSeaBlue and a bit of purple+green to tone the blue down?

If you are still after the glossy skin, then you need to go to much lighter on the highlights (I'm thinking of simply having pure white points for the last highlight, glazed with a bit of the skin to diffuse the edges/make it a bit off-white). No idea if you've seen Thomas David's speedpainting video on MM. But the usage of these small highlights can be seen there.

For the face: VAC-Mahagony? Really weird color. By default it's a very dark red-brown. But if you add Ivory to it it becomes pastely, rosy. Noticed it when painting the scarf of "An Tjin" (see gallery).
Or even light glazes of AP-RedToneInk (brownish-red color). Using it since I read about it in the "HUSH" tutorial (there GW-baal red was used, but they are the same) to make parts of the skin red (cheeks (about 1:3 mix with water), lips (undiluted or 1:1 mix), nipples(about 1:1 to 1:3 mix)).

I don't know what your talking about.your painting of models is none less than incredible.... I think your jumping way too far ahead and driving yourself nuts for no reason bud. Any and everything you paint demands attn and that's because it is that good.human beings are very competitive by nature if they weren't they'd never have dreams of aspiration which start at their youngest of ages. Your ok don't beat yourself up over it ,everything you do is fantastic.

Haven't painted enough recently to showcase here, but I did have a question of my fellow creators:

How can I add to this base to make it my own? Of course, I can add leaves or bushes on the pre-made base, but what can I do to make the existing base part of a larger base? My initial instinct is to simply incorporate the outcropping he stands upon into a larger cliff type scene. Also thought of adding snow. But really my concern is how to go about turning a pre-made base into a larger vignette? I am afraid I'll fail at duplicating the textures on the base, and so it could stick out and look clearly and obviously modified.

Any ideas from my oh-so-creative friends?

Benjamin, personally I wouldn't.
Its a heavily sculpted piece and would take a LOT of careful work to try to match in.
Having attempted something like that, and failed miserably myself, I'd suggest a very subdued paint scheme for the basing allowing the colours to fade away to shadows thereby concentrating the eye on the figure himself.

As to the figure I'd like to suggest that you could go higher on the highlights for the skin tone as, at the moment, he looks very dark skinned, near African, without the facial structure to match.

As the base is mostly root bowl you can add other vegetation to blend the edge away, or if your going for rock that can blend the edges also, if you want to match the rock texture take a mould of whats on the base then use this to create the new rocks

I did consider making a swamp or water type base, and that is an excellent idea WGS regarding the taking casts of the base in order to make similar terrain. However, I think Inshould defer to DR's wisdom in this instance. I have other projects where I can go nuts over the base, and I believe if I finish Hrungir soon I will be the first person to paint it (of which I am aware). Therefore, his base "as is" should be exciting enough to viewers that are unfamiliar with it.

Regarding his skin, yes I do plan to go bolder with the highlights. This is discussed I think a page or two previous. However, this will not change the mid-tone, and he will still maintain that dark complexion. Think Frazetta, as many of his barbarians were dark, greenish and desaturated despite their Cymerian ancestry ;)

Wow. That's one impressive fig.
And I do like where you're going with him, colour-wise. looking forward to see where this is heading :)

Also, congrats on the degree :)

Friends,

I have been absent from this wonderful hobby for too long, but I have had a recent obsession consume a great deal of my time. I recently started a political/military news and analysis website, called crusadeoftruth.com

Bailey03 (the exceptionally talented David Powell) can attest to how far I have come. Two months ago, I asked him how to go about embedding a link into a word. Now, I built an entire website from the ground up, functional and appealing.

But I am coming to you guys and gals, many of you counted among my friends, with a request: please visit the site, and if you enjoy it-subscribe. I am very proud of the content, and I have invested a lot of time and energy into the articles and the look and feel of the site.

I know that many of you disagree with me politically. But my pledge to you is that I will never post faux news or be blinded by my own partisanship. If you review the available articles, you will find that there is balance and that I research each post thoroughly.

So, please, give it a try: you might like what you see...View attachment 53574
