loved it and voted I can go either way helmet on or off these are small details busying up a base I use a rule up to 3 tiny details this can be skulls ,spears ,shields wheels cogs body parts slime piping Etc Etc. I personally could see it on or wouldn't miss it if its off. Either way I advocate you as I don't and cannot , to keep practicing your nmm as you def have a knack for it the only thing I might do a little diff would be to deepen each crease on the widdled horns some rhinox hide or that with some liche purple and then pick out the raise areas of the horns at the too half a little more contrast in the horns should do. But your adept nonetheless at this nmm stuff. God it just fascinates me that you haven't been doing this ling and your first post is amazing. But I don't hold envy nor grudges as ling as budding artists are keeping the gang motivated the that's all good enuff for me. And thanyou for the machine gun tutorial it became a dinner conversation at the table.

Everything looks great and very impressive. The basing was very nicely done. My only question and its more for everyone out there but does the black background prove to much a contrast and seep some detail away or is that just me?

It's not so much the black that steals the detail, it's that the white is overexposed. A couple reasons for this, but everything else looked good so I went with it. In the future I won't use black unless I feel the mini really calls for it. Simply put, this mini and base are pretty large and I had trouble getting a backdrop large enough to take a pic without balancing the paper AND snapping photos. So I rushed it. Lesson learned there though. Thx for voting :)

Started mini #2 last night. Primed in white, I absolutely cannot wait to start on his NMM surfaces. Really plan to make this one shine. Although tbh I'm not entirely sold on how to go about it. I can really, really challenge myself and do his metal in green. Or I can just continue to work a skill in development and do it in either a dark or bright steel, with some color glazed on top. Think I'll go with this option. The question then becomes what shade of gray is my midtone. A light one, and the mini is in clean and bright steel. A dark one, and he is in that dark oily steel. I think I'll go somewhere in the middle, because the shadow falls on the mini in such a way that some parts will be very dark, and other parts in direct sunlight.

But I have to start with the skin first. His face. Sort of intimidated by this part, because I have really struggled here before and overworked the paint. But this leads me to my first question for you guys. When I prime him and look at him under bright light-pictures later-half of his face is cloaked in shadow. I think this makes it look very dramatic, but do I then treat it like two faces. One half is painted much darker than the other? Has anyone seen a mini artist attempt this, where there is a huge line of contrast going vertically across the face? If so, would appreciate a link to see what they did. If you have read this far through my rambling then I truly do love you...

Really, really interesting second method this guy uses. Just paint in blacks and whites and then glaze over everything so that colors remain fully saturated. If I am getting this right, did you imply I should try this second method to cloak half of his face in shadow?

His first method, of highlighting up to 70% and then doing shadows before doing final highlights: I do this very frequently. On my last figure, I didn't do final highlights of the blue armor until everything was done on the entire figure. I wanted to see how all of the colors played together before deciding how much pure white to use and where to use it. So I am comfortable doing his first method.

Right now, I have a wet pallete mixed for his face. Keep in mind I am making him a dark elf, but more of the purplish fantasy type. Not dusky brown type. My pallete:

Mid-tone: Rakarth flesh. A very pallid gray skin tone.
HL1: Rakarth mixed with Kislev. May not do this because Kislev entered too much of a healthy human color. Probably just add a touch of Ivory to the Rakarth instead.
HL2: Pure Kislev. Again, may just go Rakarth with more Ivory here.
HL3: Either Kislev with Ivory OR Ivory with just a bit of Rakarth
S1: Rakarth and Xereus purple
S2: Purple glaze
S3: Purple with black glaze

So I must say, not sure exactly where I am going but this guy has some deep creases so I need to capitalize on these. I think on some parts I need the shadow to transition from a deep bruised purple to red to Rakarth to highlight. That's what is like to do with his cheekbones, at least. So here we go. Time to experiment I guess.

Sorry bud, just saw this. Good eye, you pointed out the one part I knew I didn't give my all to. And that is the horns. Funny you mention Rhinox too. That was my base coat but I let it get away from me. So yes, totally know what to do here in the future, and good observation pointing it out!
