BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

I found this site, CMON, a few months ago when looking for some inspiration on some Chaos Marauders I was sloppily "painting." I became addicted when I went through the gallery and realized that some of the pics that I thought just had to be paintings were, in fact, painted miniatures. Since then, I've met a lot of cool peoples. Everyone very nice. Most very helpful.

Case in point of a really cool dude. I was on I believe Zab's WIP, discussing how difficult it was for me to find a good source for exotic wood blanks. I only had to briefly mention this, when Khonner takes the time to PM me and offer to send some of his recent buys. Of course I said yes, and he refused to let me help with the shipping. He thanked me for my service and a couple days later, two pieces of some very cool wood. Brazilian cherry and wenge. I figure he sent me enough for 8 minis.

Just wanted to say, so cool if you Khonner. I'm in your debt.

In the background is my partner, Suki. She is an American Bulldog, champion bred. She has cancer throughout her entire body. The vets gave her two weeks to live, and she's been going strong now for 6 months without complaint. She loves life too much. (she isn't suffering, her health has actually improved over the 6 months).

Believe it or not the black wood is smaller :( Poor taste...I know.

Thx Skel. She is kickin ass. Her age is starting to show a bit but you'd never guess she was condemned by the vet to a couple short weeks half a year ago...

But I digress. Work in progress pics, yeah? Here is a couple angles of my new project. Face. Tell me how to improve. Mind you, the eye brows and hair should help give it better value.

Im sorry about Suki mate :( , make sure you give her loads of love and snacks.

The elfs face needs more pale skin i reckon, eyes look great done mess with them.

Thanks Ten. I know you feel my pain here with your recent loss.

Do you mean to say, overall make the skin more pale, or add another layer of highlight? It's a dark elf....I think. :)

Well I don't know if I will ever truly be able to capture master the skill of sculpting bear balls, but if I do I will definitely let you paint them haha. As for you and Zab being my showcase painters I say he'll yeah. Though I might have to send you the next sculpt as it has boobies in it...then again Zab did sent some GREAT reference material...

You will sculpt the BEST bear balls ever man...practice practice practice.

Seriously I'd be honored if you selected me to paint any of you sculpts. Can't promise I am as good as Zab, but I'll definitely put the effort into it and won't stop until Ive done my best.

Boobies are fun. To paint.

Indeed, DR. Expect no less from you.

Hey please check back a little later. I'll do some touching up and repost pics of the face again that aren't so shadowy. After all, it was your tut here on CMON, combined with another seminar you graciously provided, that informed my decisions.

It's all about field research. I suggest you start with the female figure. Lol

Duno how I missed Suki, I'm pleased shes feeling better than she did.

If he is a dark elf I would go more grey/ purple in the shadows, keep the mid tones and try blue highlights. Just my thoughts. but push the contrast more lights and more darks. its the face so to make it pop you gota go full spectrum. Good eyes btw, just need a glint of white on the edge of the black.

So I have a whole range of VMC grey blues. Should I do his armor in this or the traditional standard grays? I have maybe 5 different shades of blue gray, and towards the end if the spectrum of course I can add black and white. It's either this way or codex gray base, a dark gray and a light gray and of course different combinations of black and white with these. I could always glaze a touch of blue on at the end (per NMMAndy). Awaiting your advice with trepidation...

Hey BFoK,

Some of the other guys (Ten and Andy to name a couple) are much better at this NMM stuff than me. But here is what works for me. I like to think about the scene the figure is in. Fix in your mind if he is going to be clean and bright or dark and dirty or whatever combination in between and shoot for that. Add colour from his surrounds either in the paint as you build it up or as glazes at the end. Even dark and dirty metal will reflect something of what is around. Also remember that the figure is three dimensional and will be looked at from all sides when done. So you are going to want to have at least one secondary light (possibly two) source to create glints and gleams and reflections in areas not directly in the path of your primary light source and not wholly in shadow. These sources only really need to affect the metal areas (metal reflects much more brightly than cloth or skin).

Bearing all of that in mind I'd suggest going with the VMC colours to start. But you may want to add in some areas of the GW ones as well depending on what your final target is. I will say that (from experience) going with purely greys can end up with more of a stone look than a metal one and its very hard to see how to change it once you are there.

the top could become a complex mess, but also has some nice cool tones that would give it interest. There is something to be said for the simplicity of the citadel palette though...

Hmmmm...such good advice from the both of you. Discounting the reflections of the environment, the VMC would create quite a range of blue grays, where I'd have to mix paints on a couple to step from one color to the next. So to get the whole range in, it could be like 8-10 steps. But, mind you, on the citadel pallete I'll still probably do 8 different steps for my full contrasting gradient.

On the VMV line, the midtone to the HLs match very well, but the shades kind of seem off, or like I could struggle achieving a transition. TbH, I would really like to use the VMC line, BUT I think I'll test it really fast first on a bones mini or something.

In combining your answers, I think it equals=Use the citadel dark gray and light gray, go with the blue gray mid. Ok. Got it! ;)
