BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

Appreciate your feedback Max. I totally agree that contrast sells NMM. And I appreciate AndyG as a source for good NMM. That said, I think he would agree that we have proper contrast here. There is literally black, or 90% black and in some cases pure, all over the mini. My initial fear was that I put down too much dark and not enough mid. Maybe it's my camera angle, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and show it head on. Notice that in places you have you have black blended to pure white, and then pure black next to the pure white. This is the biggest contributor to the effect of NMM. Anyway here is another shot for you. Please tell me I'm not going insane and that you see black all over this figure.

Lol I was photographing him head on which happened to be where my imaginary light source is, so you were getting the mostly highlighted side. Faith in my eyesight restored...whew.

top stuff BFK, I think you have nailed it. Looking at the lighter and the darker photos I think it must look mint IRL.
Keep up the good work. Great edge highlights also, thats another factor in good NMM.

Yar. What Canny said, keep going. I have a feeling that face is going to look a little flat after you crack out on the NMM so maybe just think about setting up some colors for that.

I am really starting to like this sculpt, brings Elric to mind. Also late happy independence day. Thanks for all the freedom bro!

Thank ye both. Very happy with it so far and I have the light dark planned out for the whole thing so it should go well. But as you say, Demi, the face will need to be revisited. From one angle, it looks pretty good with his right cheekbone going from pure white to red to purple then to Rakarth flesh, the midtone. But if viewed from straight on there are some technical errors (need to tone down some highs) that need addressed, but this other angle is just not as flattering so it needs some extra work. Additionally I am very likely to redo his hair, very likely in a blue black. This should help frame his face better. I just had some issues with the current plan. Thanks again tho and great foresight.

can't tell if you've done 10 balls glazing trick as my eyes are not the best but looking at this new pic of it I WOULDN'T CHANGE anything it's a landmark for anybody to achieve these affects of greys/ whites/ blacks to simulate metals. Rennasance painters have been using this for years as they have no metallic paints when " the rennasance painters " did their great work. Right now it's exceptional dont touch it. Now if your thinking of glazing the fact that its extremely thinned is in your favor as the first even 10 layers may not show the glazes intensity .when I glaze a greenskin it'll take me around 30+ layers but lets say I like how it looks at layer 13 then I'm not going to go further. You see the glaze or blending thru translucency(layering) or just for sky earth coloring(10 balls orange earth / blue tint sky) gives you A PRECISE CONTROL OVER YOUR EFFECTS because their so thin so you can stop precisely when you've think the model has benefitted from what your trying to achieve. Iow it's precisely controlled so you can't ever make a mistake. ( their too thin) so do be afraid if still hesitant use an arm or plating of another model a test piece then you'll know first hand yay or nay. My only difference what I would've been tempted to go Is the hair/ face two light colors I would've had a darker white so as not to have the face lose its pop. It is the focal pt of any model even those who pout heart and soul in the beautiful yet often challenging ,and many times unforgiving, nmm. But this altogether is the perfect model for non metallic metals to show off and you've more than done that here.remeber I'm not saying this way or that way forums are more of how I would/ he would/ 10 ball would etc. just ideas you have the final say : after all the one painting the model knows what he/ she is setting out to achieve and no one knows that better than yourself m8!

Thanks for the kind words Zab. As always I appreciate your input.

Blood, I think I will try out that thin glaze. If I'm not mistaken, it's most effective if you place it right over the mid tone, and let it go just into the shadow and just into the highlight. This is what I did when glazing the spear on my last project, anyways. I will slowly apply it and if it kills what I have going on, no worries I can stop and fix it. Think I'll go with the orange brown for downward facing areas, and I bluish to to for most of it. This color, though, will depend greatly on how I paint the scale armor on the mini's back and under his armor. This accessory color will greatly change the mini's appearance. Right now I am leaning towards a teal or emerald green I think green looks great when shaded a deep brown. See SkeletetteS current project. But thanks for your kind words on the metals blood. Honored to have a mini painter of your renown comment on my work.

The base is going to be something special.

Agreed

Yes I agree finish the model that's what I was saying 90% done which dictates the last 10% of work. See how it works. I have created a glaze that I shadow my greenskuns with it's said jarhead a classes he emphasize shade cool and highlight warm . In a but she'll adding a grey to the shades(cool) add a light beige to highlight is habit bone commando khaki etc (warm highlights) . So back to explaining.. Right I really didn't like brown as I had something diff in my kinda a neutral ground that works fro greens and reds. It's a glaze of rhinox hide / liche purple this unification wasn't too brown and warm and wasn't to cool and purple so I mixed them both together and viola instant gratification shadow glaze. You see so that why most of my stuff shares a common color style. It was also passed onto me by kornel kozac of eavy metal team. Again I speak always in terms of layering my glazes over and over thin enough where 1) it blends through tranparecy(like you said with applying the oranges and blues to the mudstone where it overlaps and blends into the colors below). But I emphasize this is just how I do things. And your the final decision maker basing your outcome on what looks great and works after 90% of the mini is done. ;) and thank you for the compliment BFOK! It's a pleasure sharing trade secrets to budding artists it helps the old ones to keep our own understanding sharp. Your more than welcome.

Very sharp NMM, Blood. I have a couple of Trollbloods that I might give NMM another go..

You definitely should. I've seen your attempt at NMM and it looks like you are getting it down. If you have ANY ?s please ask me. I've had a lot of "Oh, that's how it's done," moments lately, and I'm hoping it's contagious.
