Bloody estate agents!

So, I\'m mooching around on the webz, thinking I should head out and go shopping (I have plans for cheesecake and Orange Boodle\'s Fool), when my landlady\'s estate agent calls and tells me she\'s got some people to show round from 2pm until about 3:30pm. I look at my watch, see it\'s 1:40 and growl a bit, but the conversation seems to end with me agreeing that they could come round. The floor was dusty, there were half-stripped minis round the bathroom sink and I had clutter everywhere! Cue frantic running around cleaning the floor (which I hate doing anyway and is a pain in the bum \'cos it\'s laminate) and corralling the mini-painting chaos round my desk before she shows up with the first person. I mean, I got it done, but really! A lil more warning would be nice next time lady!

(Before anyone asks, I\'ve known that my landlady wanted to sell the place since before I even moved in, and I do want to be helpful and do my bit because she has been really good to me. I just like a little notice before complete strangers wander round my home.)

ask her to give you a little advance warning next time, it’s not much to ask, in fact it’s just common manners :D

as someone who is looking for a house, i couldn\'t care less about clutter. it\'s the building you buy, not what\'s in it

having said that, courtesy would suggest at least a few hours notice

That\'s my point. I have no problem with her showing people round - I understand it\'s necessary - but we agreed at the start that she\'d give me some warning first. I think she realised that I was a bit pissed off by it all though, so hopefully next time I\'ll get more than 20 minutes\' notice.

Oh I know. But it would appear that I take after my Mum in some ways after all, and I couldn\'t bear people looking round my house if it was in a state.* Must have worked, the first guy was asking if I was going to be staying on as a tenant.

*Strange compulsive cleaning behaviour also manifests when I\'m about to go on holiday. I hate to come back to a mess, but that doesn\'t explain why I\'ve found myself defrosting the fridge at 2 in the morning on the day I\'ve got to go catch a plane. Guess I\'m just weird that way!

I didn\'t know the house was going to be for sale when I moved in, and first notice I got last year was a letter telling me to be out of the house on day X and time Y.

Home owner got a prompt call telling her there was \"no way in hell anyone was going through my property unwatched\". Also warnings have been given on times, and that police offers would be present at later showing after the real estate agents have tried knocking holes in the walls for us to be blamed for, and the 3 hour wandering around this 7 room house crap would not exist. As the police on hand would be there to show them to their cars when they had used enough time.

I am sorry, but I don\'t believe in that crap. People living in a house have rights, and everyone MUST respect them. The real estate agent trying to just walk in one day almost didnt duck in time when she opened the door to the bathroom on me. She was promptly served with trespassing and refused to be allowed back, and lucky to have not been served with breaking and entering for coming unannounced.

Yes one hours notice is not enough time for a leasee in many states in the US. I forget what the term is, but a minimum 24 hours is required for emergencies for the home-owner to even come inspect the property in question. There is no such thing as a \"sell my house emergency\".

Check with your local laws and if it continues, ask to see if an officer can help you in the future.

I don\'t really mind, well I do but, letting them show, but the home-owner isn\'t even present when they come here, and they will not try to force there way into my home.

Where I come from you knock on a door when you come onto someones property and wait for it to be opened for you when the property is occupied.

 :cussing:

Needles to say the real estate company itself has gotten a few phone calls lately explaining how his agents are likely to be arrested for future transgressions and attempts at damaging the property in my case.

Sounds like your landlord thinks like the realtor here that you are not a human, but a $ on a page to make a commission off of. So check with your local law enforcement agencies to make sure your renter rights are not being discarded.

Not as creepy as the one that asked me how often I use me bedroom as well as asking me about all my bills amounts and such. He was informed that my financial records and nocturnal activities were frankly none of his @%#^ business. ;)

I would have greeted the agent and the prospective buyer at the door wearing nothing but boxers and dirty socks.

That\'ll teach \'em.
Maybe. It would certainly weird them out - I\'m a girl! lol

I\'ve had the estate agents turn up at 9 in the morning and knock me from my bed hoping to show a gaggle of moon-faced weirdos round my flat....with zero warning.

Then had the stones to try and rip into me about the fact that there were drunk mostly naked people lying around from the party the night before.
One brief throwing out and am angry phone call later:cussing: and i got a swinging letter of apology and half rent for a month.
Trick is to read your contact and know that theres a legal minimum to the notice period they have to give you.
I think its 12 hours but most estate agents stick to 24, thay also have no right to access your property when you are not there unless its an emergency.

SO the trick is....estate agents.....JUST SAY NO:D

I had a landlady like that at Uni. Fortunately, we didn\'t have any drunk nekkid types lying around, but we would have been well within our rights to! If she does it again, I will!

I believe the 24 hours\' notice thing usually only applies for random landlord visits. If you know the house is being shown, less notice is required. A day\'s notice would be courteous, however, as well as prudent since showing a messy house is undesirable.

I\'ve heard stories of good and bad real estate agents, but one of the worst that I know the victim of was a friend who bought a house, only to check it out before the move-in date and find that the seller\'s agent had come by and stolen a bunch of the kitchen cabinets! I believe the seller had to pay for new ones.

Shadzar... what benefit did they expect from putting holes in your walls?
