Blu-Ray vs HD DVD war

Anyone familiar with it or has taken a side? Not meant as a instigation post..those who are familiar with the war will know why its such a sticky topic.

I personally went Blu Ray just because I bought a PS3 and it wasn\'t until that point I realized there was a world outside of just plain old DVD.

Anyways.. Paramount and Universal... Stubborn or risk takers?

It\'s utterly pointless for most people at the moment I reckon. Why does anyone want to buy their entire movie collection AGAIN? Until (free to air) TV stations start broadcasting in HD or I can stream HD content off the web, I really don\'t see the point. Uprated DVDs look fine to me...

Saying that, I do have an HDTV to play Xbox on....

I have no problem replacing my movie collection.. Especially the movies I really like.

Aliens, Predator, Saving Private Ryan etc.. all deserve high def treatments.

Streaming movies will bomb as who will want to pay for digital online services just to download a movie that will take hours. Might as well just pay the 20 bucks and get a copy you can sit back and watch anytime. Don\'t need to worry about extra harddrives, download fees, internet access etc....

If you plan on upgrading your TV to a High Def anytime soon, then buying regular DVDs is pointless IMO.

The porn industry is all about the internet nowadays. They decided the vhs/betamax thing in the 80s but they are a different beast.

The porn industry has pretty much chosen Blu Ray and the first wave of releases is due out shortly. I will be picking some up for a more thorough inspection.

Not quite true - as they already went with HD DVD

I have both - simply because if I want to watch a film in high definition i don\'t want to be restricted. The main thing I will say now though, is that both are overpriced per disk

Yes they went HD DVD..but nothing is written in stone. Digital Playground has gone blu among a few... With Warner defecting..its only a matter a time before Universal and Paramount succumb.

As for overpriced? I agree..but I usually find them for about 20 bucks somethings getting a buy 1 get 1 free...

Shaz Ive found on my trips over there that a $20.00 DVD in the states is a $20 pound DVD in the UK..thats like $40.00.. face it you guys are gitting screwed when it comes to most things like this. Same goes for Cd\'s.. I can get most here $12-14.00 USD when I know they are that or more in pounds..

I strongly suspect Blu-Ray will win out because every time I have been in an HMV or other entertainment type store, the shelves have been VERY thin on the ground with HD-DVD films but there have been a lot of Blu-Ray ones.

If I was in the market for an HD player, it woule certainly be the one with the most available films.

Coupled with the fact that Blu-Ray has the higher maximum theoretical capacity and the PS3, I think it\'s going to win.

We are still using the television we bought (used) ten years ago, and we bought hubby\'s PS2 about 6 months after Sony put them on the market. I\'m not big on having to get the new high-speed stuff, so somebody please tell me what the difference is between HD and Blu-ray? What if you have an HD dvd player and try to play a blu-ray disk in it? Or, vice-versa?

this is a little old but does break it all down nicely: http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/19/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-state-of-the-s-union-s-division/

Blu Ray all the way for me.

Simply more backing, it is better quality than HD, and this is from my own personal tests, as well as reading others views, but only marginally better, not enough to show much of a difference really.

Also the Blu Ray disks are cheaper I have found.

Also once Sony get off their arses and sort out th ePS3 at a decent price(but i still have one:( ) Blue Ray will take hold.

And lastly it\'s not Microsoft, main reason I never bought an XBox:D

Okay, I get it now. The HD dvd\'s should play normal dvd\'s, though, if I understand correctly. The Blu-ray would require new discs. So, what is the connection with the PS3?

ps3 plays the blue ray discs, spazzy...

i just got mine, and a lcd hdtv...i haven\'t bought any of the blue-ray discs yet, but i can say that regular dvd\'s on an hdtv suck...you can see the pixels whenever anything moves quickly...i just got the hd cable(which doesn\'t come with the stupid ps3 of course), so now i can enjoy my games at full resolution...

cheers

From what I have seen, the players on the market of each type are able to play regular DVDs.

The PS3 thing is noteworthy because they come with a BluRay player, though also worth a mention is that the PS3 doesn\'t have the facility for HD Audio output.

And while I do dislike MS for some thing, Sony aren\'t exactly whiter than white!

So, regular disks can\'t be played in HD or Blu ray, and the two aren\'t interchangeable. PS3 plays blu ray and ps3 games, but (correct me if I\'m wrong) it isn\'t compatible with PS2 gamesbecause of a different disk format? This is all very odd. It\'s an interesting way for the companies to try to get people to buy more disks, etc.

*edit* was typing this while squidders was posting. I suppose that if the new HD and Blu ray players will play regular discs well, then it would be worth choosing one, but if not I wouldn\'t even think of buying one.
