Yeah, I visited the exhibition in Berlin a couple of years ago.
Pretty empressive stuff; not for the light hearted or sensitive crowd, though.
Nice to see how my lung will look in 20 years *lights cigarette*
I bought the book and wanted to start sculpting, unfortunatelly I never found the time:~(

Theres a Bodies exhibition going on currently here in Cincinnati. I think in another city in the US to. They have been causing a lot of contraversy though as all the bodies are Chinese and preserved in China and the company responsible can\'t or wont prove they are not the bodies from executed political and criminal prisoners.
ABC\'s show 20/20 dug up the story.
Theres some things going on in the courts to try and stop the exhibits.

There\'s one in Edmonton, as well. It\'s getting the same annoying controversy. In the campus newspaper this spring, one very annoying columnist (who I was \"lucky\" enough to have class with as well) tried to compare signing your body to science to children giving consent to sex with adults. Wtf ???
Maybe some of the other criticisms out there make more sense, but hey people consent to this crap and you have to pay to get in to see the bodies anyway, so it\'s not like the corpses are going out of their way to scare you.

The controversy I read about a while back was the question of whether most people donating their bodies to science would consider being flayed, platicized, posed rocking out with a guitar or similar things and used for a paid exhibit to be science. I seriously doubt this is what my mom has in mind when she tells us she wants her body donated to science. I\'m sure when the time comes she expects to be dissected by students or people doing a study on certain illnesses, that sort of thing. (And I know there are people who would far rather be preserved rocking out than dissected by students, but the point of the article I read was you don\'t really get input into what happens to your remains under the blanket of \'donated to science\'.)
Certainly I can see the value of preserving bodies in such a way as to make it easier for anatomy students and so on to study them. But I can also see where some people might feel that putting them on display in this way is more exploitative and sensationalized than it is educational.

See thats the whole point of the 20/20 investigation.. they are saying that these poor soul didn\'t have a say..that they were executed by the Chinese government, sold to this company and turned into an exhibit for profit.
There are people here (Mostly Catholic clergy) who are against the whole turning of a person into this sort of exhibit but they are small compared to the major issue at hand.

Well investigations have supposedly shown that \"informed consent\" was given by donors, or in the case of the children/fetuses then their parents gave informed consent. There have been lawsuits and other legal mumbo jumbo in the last few years surrounding this exhibit, and so far everything\'s been in favor of Dr. Von Hagens.
I wonder if there\'s any evidence that the bodies came from prisons or whatever, I don\'t watch 20/20

if you see the exhibition, there is a bit at the end where you can sign a proper consent form for it. i think if you consent to give your body to science, it will be used as such, and would unlikely to be used for display
*edit* i have seen the exhibition too. quite nice to see it as a healthcare worker. it\'s not often you see pm\'s and any work done in the anatomy labs is all preserved in formaldehyde so all the colours are faded to dull greys and browns. it\'s totally different to a living body, or a plasticised one
Well saw them when they where here in Austria. I didn\'t like it!
How can someone make artsy fartsy poses with humans? Also when the first exihibit was out here there were stories going around that the corpses where from Chinese prisoners...And they also had a Woman opening her uterus like a window to let a view to an embryo in there....This was just sick and had nothing to to with \"information\" :|~
If you want to learn something about the human body: Just go to an anatomy or medicine museum.

Lots of people and organisations make money out of dead people.
I\'d be quite happy for Gunther to go the whole hog and just call it an art exhibition. That\'d really wind people up!
In the docs defense he has publicly stated that when he dies he will be added to the exhibition. All the legal stuff has come to nothing because all the people are well informed of how the bodies will be used, as for 20/20 I am skeptical as to any \'report\' conducted by the media as for them no news isn\'t good news. I think it is a good way for the masses to look at something not alot of people do, I mean how many people on the street look through medical textbooks to see how the body looks, not many, and if it inspires a few people too then great.

when the body worlds 2 was in Denver, it had record breaking sales. i went twice. it was the most incredible thing that i have ever seen in a museum, and a lot of other places as well. it has stuck with me as an experience of a lifetime. i will go again if i ever have a chance.

Hmm, guess your right at that point. Most people of MTV Generation need such shows to get interested in anatomy.
Perhaps in Body Worlds 3 he will animate the corpses. Like that guy with the guitar is really playing and headbanging then?
I think its too expensive for what you see. Perhaps I have that opinion cause I saw already a lot of inner organs and parts of the human body. Thats your daily job at a histology. I\'m not working in one, but had some practica during my study.
And its something different if you use the money for a funeral and the things related. You don\'t invite your whole city (for a fee) to watch your dead relatives lying in the coffin.
Of course funerals are expensive and a lot of companies make money with it, but for a different reason...
