Boo hoo... sob... please learn from my mistake!

I\'m so mad at myself! I was fully prepared to put a post on this site warning everyone who cared to read to never, ever use Krylon Matte Finish spray.

Last night I \"varnished\" a 20 dwarf regiment. I put a lot of time into these dwarfs. They were very nice looking for a plastic regiment. I was very happy with them.

So I varnished them last night. But when I was done I noticed a chalky gray residue on all of them! AAAAAAARGH! What happened? What did I do? Darn the Krylons to heck-fire!

But, I said, perhaps when the models dry the gray residue will disappear. I hoped. I was wrong. When I woke up this morning the gray remained. Alas, my 20 dwarf boys look ghostly, but not enough to pass for an undead regiment.

So, I was fully prepared to get on the site and complain that the Krylons were secretly out to thwart gamers. Then I read on the back where it says; DO NOT USE IN EXTREAM HUMIDITY.

What!!!!? I live in Georgia. That\'s the only kind of atmosphere we get here, extream humidity. Even last summer when we had the worst drought we\'ve seen in a decade we never had less that 60% humidity. We sweat in the winter here.

Anyway, learn from my mistake and read instructions. It will probably save a few dwarf figures.

60% humidity is not extreme. Humidity in Singapore (where I am) is regularly 99%, and doesn\'t seem to affect varnish that badly. The trick is to apply very thin coats and allow them to dry thoroughly, or to do it in an airconditioned room (after which you should open the windows and ventilate)

Indoor Spraying...

Hay Man have you thought of setting up an indoor spray both?

I have a dual fan window unit,that you can set to pull in out or circulate the air.

all you need to do is snag a decent window fan,these are made to fit any window...for like $25 to $40 for a real nice unit...I have a $35 machine...anyhow.

Just instal this and then set up a bar stool or a card tabel ect,in front of the window,and then paper off the area around the tabel or you can uas a card board box to inclose the figures,then spray till your hears content.

No mess...no ruined figures,and like CA said above,just have the room cooler then get to priming.

Why are you complianing about humidity? I live in a desert for cryin\' out loud! I breath dust and sometimes small insects.

But I\'ve had no problems with my matte spray here (although it does look a bit glossy at times for my liking). I did once get this ugly frosty look, but I beileve it was from excessive spray which it warns against.

Chern Ann: I was only guessing at our humidity hovering around 60%. I know it was high. I just checked it and today it is 94%. So Saturday evening it was probably similar since conditions are about the same now.

Chrispy: I was complaining. I\'m sorry. I do not regret living in Georgia. I live in a beautiful green state with mild winters. The down side is plenty of humidity. But you are right, I shouldn\'t complain.

Primarily I was lamenting the loss of my 20 dwarfs. The regular colored paints don\'t appear harmed by the varnish, save a few gray spots here and there. The primary damage was done to the armour and weapons. What was shiny and metallic is now dull and gray. It looks like I didn\'t even use metallic paints. In some areas it looks like the metallic paint began to disolve.

It almost looks like I sprayed too much varnish on the minis, though I tried to be sparing. Who knows, perhaps it wasn\'t the humidity at all, but my own ineptitude.

Big Mean Elf: Thanks for the tip. I might try this if I can find the appropriate window unit. I hate having to take everything outside to spray.

Living in Austin, I feel your pain, I really do. We have those nice mild summers (100 + degrees farenheit and 90% + Humidity).

You can always do a touch up of the melted areas and then use a paint on gloss varnish on those areas. Perhaps a little future floor wax? Just don\'t use it on the areas you want to keep \"Matte\"

hehehe....in a game I was running someone played a character named Mathew Black....my response \"You\'re playing Matt Black?!?! That\'s a paint color!!!\" Then another player decided to play Forrest Green

I had the same thing happen with a unit of my Clan War avalanche guard using GW matte.. fortunately it gave them a dusty look on their earth tones. I live in nebraska, so if I don\'t like the weather I just wait an hour.
