Book Recommendations...

Read any good books lately?

Particularly regarding the hobby, I mean. I\'m looking for some good instructional titles that may focus in particular on historical painting. I\'d like more information on achieving the realism that historical modellers often get with their work.

Don\'t get me wrong, if you know of a great title for fantasy/scifi styles I\'d love to hear about that too!

So lets have it! What are the books that changed your painting life?

Not any of the categories you mentioned but a book I thought was fantastic was one called Nathan\'s Run. One of the only books I have read twice - the Hobbit being the other one.

Not all that new any longer, but still extremely comprehensive: \"Grand livre de peinture sur figurines\" by Jérémie Bonamant with the help of a lot of other (French) painters. This book covers just about every technique you could ever want to use. Only drawback, presently it\'s only available in French. There should be more about this book on the forums and at Jérémie\'s personal website.

This thread mentions a good one:

There are also some good how-to books from a few Continental firms (these are slim volumes usually, bear in mind re. the price) but I don\'t have any titles to hand. Andrea make a few painting guides but the house style isn\'t really right up there in the realism stakes as a rule. Good starting point maybe.

You could try a quick search on planetFigure or Timelines for past threads asking the same question, sure to be at least one recommendation. Quite frankly so much can be learned these days from the Internet, for free, books are much less of a go-to resource than they used to be.

Indeed, that is a good book, Einion. I bought a copy from abebooks after reading that thread so actually two recommendations came up trumps in one suggestion. :D

airhead

Coffin Dodger / Keymaster
Terrian Modeling, lots of good hints and tricks even if it is primarilly geared towards museum type diaramas.

@roger: Ah, so you are the one.
I spotted a copy on Abebook with good price. I went into the kitchen to grab something, and when I came back out, that copy was sold. That copy is suppose to be mine, mine, mine  In the end, I settled for a slightly expensive copy from another seller. lol

btw, mattrock, that is one great book  The pic alone will give you tons of inspiration.

Has anyone read Mike Blank\'s \"Sculpting & Body Language\"? is it any good? or is it similar to Horan\'s?

The Bill Horan book is great as is Danillo Cartacci,s book can\'t remeber the bloody title and I ain\'t at home at the moment... anyone????

There are also tons of useful online resources if you have a good search on the historical modelling sites.

@falela. I may have been the one. I do seem to remember getting it at a very good price, although I\'d have to check old bank statements to see how much and I can\'t be arsed to do that. :D

EDIT: It\'s still stored in my abebooks account and yep, very good price, especially compared to the prices from Amazon on that link that DR posted.

Danillo Cartacci\'s book is called simply \"Painting Miniatures\". It\'s great and anyone who is interested mainly in painting should rather get that one than Bill Horan\'s, IMO. Bill Horan\'s book is also good for painting, but what makes that one truly great are the sculpting and diorama sections, I think.

BTW, I got the Bill Horan book on Amazon for £13.50 a few weeks ago! :bouncy:

@falela
I have Mike Blank\'s book (the one you mentioned) and it\'s really good. It\'s quite short and compact (about 50 or so pages), but it still contains a lot of info. Might be considered expensive for such a thin book, though.

Would you mind posting links to some of the better ones in your opinion? Most of the mini sites I\'m able to find revolve around fantasy/scifi or are in a language I don\'t understand. ;)
