Bot MK I

Back in 2008 I sculpted this Girlbot as a present:

I've decided to revisit this concept for a new project - a set of three robots for casting: a boy, girl and generic robot.

Basic concept sketch:

Armature:

I have armatures prepared for the other two sculpts but will wait for more photos (or at least some kind of concept sketch) before posting these.

I like the idea of giving the boy robot a little rucksack!

Last nights progress:

BotMKI-26-Jun-2012.jpg

I've had plenty of practice with this kind of ribbed tubing over the years and it never seems to get any easier! It's tricky wrapping the putty evenly around the armature. I find that one I start chopping up the shapes one 'edge' ends up too thin on putty! In future I will likely work in small sections.

Tonights progress:

I'll neaten this up as it cures. The lower leg plates were added in attempt to reduce the likelihood of the legs breaking if the mini goes to casting. I guess they also break up the ribbed texture and add a little more interest.

Very cool man,put me down for a set.Had a busy couple of days but meant to email you to say that the clown and his bunny friend arrived on friday safe and sound.I've got a week or so before everything has to go in boxes so I'll probably get to lay some paint on them both during the week.

cute! I'm impressed at the speed you work at. I paint/sculpt at about the same rate as glaciers move down valleys...

Cheers mate! I'll keep you informed: I plan on having the robot(s) cast and released alongside my next clowns so things should be looking busy before you know it. I'm really glad your minis reached you safely. Hope you like them and can't wait to see the results of your hard paint work!

Glad you like! I sometimes get a fair bit of sculpting done but my problem is often in the finishing! I feel like I have a load of half finished sculpts at the moment. But at least it'll mean I'll have a job lot ready to send to Black Dragon Castings ;-)

I've made a start on the arms. The left hand will be holding the strap of the rucksack and the right hand will be clutching a text book.

Arm-atures (pardon the terrible pun...):

Last night I added some plasticard as a base for the book. I also re-did his left arm as I realised it was proprotionally dodgy.

Tonight I added a cap, sculpted the forearms and book:

Book cover sculpted (needs a quick trim) and a clumsy knick in the cap peak smoothed out.

Nice, I like this little fella. Backpack and cap are really nice touches. Can't tell if it's the angle, or the pic, but the feet still look a bit rough. What if you added a little something to them to make them look like sneakers? Maybe circles w. stars to the inside ankle like Converse?

Cheers! The feet I will take a look at. His legs definitely need some work - the lower legs smoothing and the ribbing pretty much resculpting on the upper legs. I've just returned from 4 days in Amsterdam and still have a week and a half left off work. I'll aim to finish this sculpt off in that time. There is some tidying up and resculpting to do but not too much actual work remaining.

I opted out of the teddy bear keyring concept. Instead, I went for a robot design. The arms and legs of the tiny robot are ribbed too, although this doesn't show in the photo.

I like the mini robot on the back pack. One thing from this angle and it may be the photo, but the back of the ball cap does not look like it lays on the head correctly.

Your eyes do not deceive you! The cap does take an unconventional shape however it is completely intended. The cap is symmetrical and so appears the same from the other side of the head. I will take a look at this but during sculpting it seemed to work :)

Nearly done I believe... Neatened up the upper legs (and strengthened them a bit), smoothed some areas of the book, added zips to the rucksack and a badge to the cap. Originally the cap badge was on the right. I moved it to the left for balance as I realised the bulk of the details (keyring and book) were already on the right.
