Yup read this story this morning too. I guess it\'s not all that surprising. I mean, nature needs to definitely do something to thin out the population of humans . . .

nope not sick at all to agree with me. The planet is grossly over populated and it will probably reach max K here in our lifetime unless there is some outbreak of something to thin our ranks. Happens every so often throughout time and we are about due for another major catastrophe. Just lookat it this way though, those of us who are of European descent probably had ancestors who survived the plague, there is an actual genetic marker for that as well apparently. And that slight mutation makes you less susceptible . . . or so said a study I heard about a few years ago. It was a program presented on PBS if I remember correctly.

Certainly it was; is US (until mid 50), in Russia (until mid 60), in China (possibly even now, I am rather out date on this one), and experimental research under the guise of vaccine strains is active in all these countries and few others. It is the easiest bug to weaponise too.
What they are writing there is really vary from country to country. In Russia and China, for example, there are areas where it is almost impossible to get rid of the wild animal carriers so it keep persisting in the wild and has to be permanently monitored, I will not be surprised if the same situation exists in some wester states in US - prairie dogs are wonderful carriers.

Not so much of a shock that a disease has been turned into a weapon, but rather that this particular disease has been turned into a weapon. When the intent is to recreate the time of The Plague, that just turns my stomach somewhat.
Careful now! HIV was the previous great hope of those with similar sentiments, and these days, it\'s fashionable and politically popular to makes heroes out of those infected with it. They\'re damn near canonised and deified.

I\'m not sure what I need to be careful about there Mod. Just stating a fact that the human populations are really too big and need to be thinned out.
It\'s not my HOPE that the black death do this, just stating that this is the natural course of nature to take is to thin our ranks or any other animal\'s ranks when they get too big.
For instance, when deer populations get too thick then hunting is encouraged for a brief while.
Humans have come up with treatments and preventative measures for nature to take it\'s course which means we will end up having a devastating blow once something is finally powerful enough to resist the medical advancements.

Ah, but see, you think as a normal human, who also operates under misconception that the point of bacteriological weapon is to kill.
In reality, it is not - killing is unfortunate byproduct. It is very cynical but from the military and economic point of view a dead person is not a problem because in a short run one dead person puts minimal strain on your opponent.
What you actually want is person alive that requires medical attention. If you have sufficient number of people like this, you strain your opponent\'s public health system, creates all possible problems with population and material\'s movements and so on and so forth. In short dysentery and typhoid are much better weapons then plague. Plague is easily treatable, requires animals and an insect vector for persistence and prophylaxis is very cheap and effective.
So, I doubt we have any chance of getting back to the time of the \"Black Death\", not with your old plague anyway. (Part of the reason why most of the major WMD players in the world dropped plague early on)

Plague, pestilence, famine, the human race has been through it all. We\'ve found every way our nasty little minds can imagine for killing each other, and every new or re-surfacing disease has caused mass panic. Avian flu, SARS, Ebola, HIV/AIDS, Mad cow disease, MRSA, plus so many more. Not to say that these things aren\'t threats, and I\'m not saying that they haven\'t been devistating, but they have yet to become the thing that they were originally expected to become. I suspect that the plague will be much the same.

The funny thing is if I remember correctly, the plague has to have a certain number of nights where the temperature range is just right for it to make the kink in the flea\'s intestinal tract which leads to the flea spreading the disease - which is why prior to the 536 AD eruption of Krakatoa which lead to an overall decrease in planetary temperature the plague really wasn\'t seen in Europe.
Which leads me to wonder why we are seeing the right temps in sub Saharan Africa to cause this - cause we are not talking about warm temperatures here.
