British troops captured by Iranian forces

@Airhead: Well if you want to be picky then...
By landmark I meant like a booth, or no man\'s land with barbed wires, and a few guards with rifles... or whatever it looks like, haven\'t been to Iran yet. It\'s possible to forget you are at 134.6n 128.2e in the midst of an operation, or ignore it.
I am not in the oil business, meaning I don\'t really care where the oil I use comes from, I don\'t buy and sell barrels of oil, and I get no interest in the oil corporations, and I am surely not commanding the invasion of other countries to insure I get more oil.
So we got to invade other countries for our \"free world\" to continue functionning, ah. Maybe we made some mistakes in the way we planned things.
Ah, no, god has given occidentals the earth to use as they please, I forgot that, sorry. So I guess nobody can say anything about that, your doing god\'s work over there...

As far as I know, there are no Iranian members on this site to provide a good balance for this argument, just a bunch of self-righteous americans or brits that have been taught to hate people they don\'t know. Only thing I know, is that Iran would be far more of an adversary than Iraq, and maybe all coalition countries would finally remember what a war really is and what mess they got us into.

And before the argument is brought up. I am aware than canada is not at all better, and I can rant about it plenty myself.

Now the argument nobody wants to hear or say:
And as for the soldiers, they\'re soldiers right, part of the military, trained and paid for operation, and maybe face a little danger, who knows; it\'s war, they\'re soldiers. I wouldn\'t go to the area with a gun strapped to my back without expecting some people to get angry at me. If we are to invade other countries, we are to expect a little pain and blood, and not get overly soft about it. If you don\'t want trouble to happen to you, it\'s a good decision to stand clear of the military. Maybe some people need to read the definition of war, been around for a while and it always ended up with a few people getting hurt.

Don\'t get me wrong, I wish only for them to return safe, but it feels a bit dumb to endorse war on one end, and then get all upset because a bunch of soldiers get hurt or captured.

Now, that\'ll surely get me some friends

Edit: I would like to congratulate both Krom and Skeeve for the interesting, balanced and considerate contrubution to the discussion, sure doing a better job than me here :D

And just getting your sources from the BBC site isn\'t realy going to give you a balanced opinion!

speaking of lack of kit, remember when that guy in iraq died, as he had to give his bullet proof vst to his officer, as there were none left? That is a bit rubbish for one of the worlds richest countries.

Britain isn\'t at war with Iran.

Let me rephrase that: the Arabs have given the Jews, their most hated enemies, the go ahead to bomb other Arabs.
Which Arabs are those? The ones in Iran who are in fact Persian? ;)
Like the Mexicans are all Mayans?
Sorry, I tend not to call people by the fallen empires that they choose to try and differentiate themselves with.
Besides Persia was conquered by the Arabs and held for a couple hundred years, not to mention, the open borders, I\'d guarantee there are far more of Arab descent than original Persian.

There are whooping 3-5% of Arabs in Iran. People of Iran do not speak Arabic, they speak Farsi. In fact these are two completely unrelated languages that belongs two different language families. Farsi is Indo-European while Arabic is Semitic. The difference is much greater then, say between English and Russian (they are both are Indo-European languages)
The writing system was indeed borrowed from Arabic while graphically similar it was modified and completely unintelligible for either reader. Again, writing system means nothing; how about the similarity between English and Vietnamese? They have the same writing system.
OK, I might concede to the fact they may not be considered Arabs, however, not due to language. Are the Canadians that speak french in fact French? Are the Welsh, Irish, or Scottish English?

Persia no longer exists, it hasn\'t for two or more generations, so to call them Persians, to me, is as silly as calling black Americans who have been here for four or even more generations, have never been to Africa, and will never go to Africa, African-Americans.
Nope, sorry, they\'re just plain Americans, who happen to be black. Ditto, with all the other Hyphenated Americans out there.

So while we may disagree, I\'ll restate my statement as to this: It is Muslims giving the OK to the Jews to bomb other Muslims.

Better?

Here the persians and everyone else calls the Iranians who have come to Canada Persians.

BUT the point is Iranians aren\'t all Arabs (repeated for revelancy).

Really? Odd. Do you also call Americans, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh, English? I mean, after all they were all under the English Empire at one point. Or should we start calling ourselves Romans?

We call them Iranians here, or that guy from Iran.

Welsh are not English. Thought I\'d open up with that one.

As to the border dispute I\'ll wait and see on that one.

Back in 2001 Australia intervened in East Timor. A few days into the operation we had a skirmish with Indonesian Border guards killing one of them. We claimed we were on our side of the border, they claimed we had crossed over. Our soldiers had GPS and maps, they had local knowledge. Two months afterwards we admitted we were in the wrong. GPS doesn\'t help if someone has been careless marking down where the border actually is.

I hope the RN personnel get out safely and expect they will. A stronger response at the time may have prevented them being taken, it may also have left quite a few dead on both sides. Do you think the Iranians didn\'t have support of their own waiting? The guys captured obviously didn\'t believe fighting would be effective, and at the end of the day they were the ones most likely to go home in a body bag.

I don\'t. But the point is, they call themselves persians, and we do in return.

Know what? I heard about this and my first impression was to laugh my ass off, and let me tell you why.

The boarding party would (should have) consisted of memberes of the marines SBS and a couple of officers (for the most part, \"elites\"). This should have been backed up by a frigate with a big ass gun pointing in their general direction. Something in the vein of, \"Move an inch sunny Jim and we\'ll sink you\".

NOW!

How the hell did the iranians manage to capture that many people? Something tells me Mr Blair has been f**king about with kit again seeing as our boys must have been missing assorted kit and weapons and one Very large boat!!!!

Good Job Tony!!! We lost another one today, but by GOD the coffers looking just PEACHY!!!
Ah yes \"What money!?\"... :flame:
