Brown depth

Hi all,

Hope everyone is having a good day.

I was hoping for some advice with regards to the attached picture. I'm currently painting a large scale wolverine similar to this and need some help with the brown. Does anyone have tips on how to get this brown depth? I could try a black undercoat, followed by Mournfang Brown base, then black wash but it's the textures and highlights I'm struggling with.

Any advice would be very helpful and appreciated

Not sure what paints you have,.. but using gw paints as the standard,.. I'd say use a base coat of rhinox hide (it's almost that exact shade of brown). Then strategically place some black wash (null oil) into the creases between muscles to create the darkened shadows. There doesn't look to be much highlight on this model, but should you choose to do one, I'd suggest a 50/50 mix of rhinox hide and a tan color of you choice. Build the highlights in thin layers, and you should be good.

Rather than use black try Vallejo Model Colour German Camo Black Brown and the Vallejo Airbrush version of the same colour.
The Airbrush colour is slightly darker than the VMC and will help you get a richer tone in your brown shadows than using straight black.

Thanks both. In response to my paints I use a mix of Citadel, Vallejo Model and more recently Army Painter. Thanks very much for the advice! I'll post some pics tonight to show how I've gotten on.

mmm Camo Black Brown. A wonderful color for all things dark.
