Brushbanes Studio Blog

Hi all. I've been trolling the forums for a while and thought I'd better get involved. I'm Brushbane/Alex/Phayse, depending on what forums/real life planes you frequent. I run a commission studio that specialises in providing commission painting for those on a budget.

I've been residing on DakkaDakka for a while now, and have settled in well. Whilst over there, I've talked myself into a bit of a corner with a challenge blog. Alongside working on my commission projects and expanding my gallery, I've taken on a number of challenges from the community - kind of like a trial run commission that everyone can join in on.

I plan to post my progress on CMON as well for anyone interested.

Currently I've picked up 4 challenges.

1. Harlequin Troupe Master
2. Cato Sicarius
3. Warhammer Regiment ( Pink Horrors - Brief states that they must appear as if they are phasing into reality.)
4. Non Metallic Metals with Sigvald the Magnificent.

Rather than clutter the boards up with a duplicate blog, head on over to dakka and throw me a few challenges of your own!

Phayses Challenge Blog! You call the shots!

I'll also post up in progress works where the client allows me to, along with general workbench updates for anything interesting.

I'm still building up a web presence for the studio, as most of my work thus far has been in my local region and london, so I'll just pop up a few examples of my tabletop standards.

Well, I think that's it for the time being. Currently finishing off a few commissions before working on more gallery material and tackling some of my challenges. I've just laid hands on some of the island of blood sprues, so I'll be cranking out a few of those over the next few days.

Until then!

Quick update. Been rather ill this week, so haven't made an awful lot of progress with anything, although I did sit down to paint this chap.

Skin tone was a discovery while simulating rust. Rust isn't always orange, occasionally in moist air, you get growth, so I was knocking up a green tint.

It was overlaid on this darker base colour.

More updates when I'm not so ill.

Not a hint of dip to him.

Base Brown, Iyanden darksun - 2 or 3 thin coats with matte medium. Gryphonne sepia in the recesses. Midtone with a 50/50 Iyanden darksun and golden yellow (premixed in dropper bottles for uniform colour across the army)

Highlight with the premix and Vallejo GC Bonewhite - 2:1
Final Highlight with a 1:1 of the same.

I disagree with dip for two reasons - it's a real crowd splitter.

1 - Gamning brand dip is extortionate for what is essentially an unfinished effect.
2 - I don't plan on having barbecues and patio furniture on my minis, so they tend not to need an all weather sealant.

I don't have a problem with anyone who does dip, but it's kinda like learning the intro to a song but nothing else. I think in some cases it's a pretty inhibitive barrier to anyone with any desire to improve.

My apologies then, certain parts of the Ork and Blood Raven Marine had that dip look. Probably just the photo.

I like both marines, not a fan of the colours for the Ork. I think his clothing is all a very similar colour, which makes him lack definition.

Not a problem dude. Although, if dip did have that effect, I'd be sexing up the people behind dip so fast!

Seriously - raw, animal sex. EDIT! Just in the middle of finalising a few commissions. There's two in particular that I'm so excited about, I offered some pretty hefty discounts! The first is still being discussed, so I will reveal all when it's finalised, but I can say that I've got a truly awesome job on the way! It's a custom nobz biker squad with painboy and a big mek on a converted trike. It sounds full of win, so I hope to be able to post some tasters up when I start work.
