Hi folks

I have just been looking at a few mini\'s with some very fine paintwork , like extra fine extremely straight lines etc , is all this due to some extremely fine brushes or do some people use some type of pen . Being fairly new to this could I get some advice on brush sizes for these sort of details the smallest I have is a 5/0 , and any pen users , what do you use . Thanks a lot for any advice .

Take care

I use brushes exclusively, and the smallest one I have is an 18/0 from Master\'s Touch brushes. It\'s got a number on it which I think must be a model number, and that number is 6050, and it\'s called a \"spotter\". I got it at Hobby Lobby. Good luck :)

Technical pens have their place....

Brushes are great for painting, but when you are attempting to do very fine detailed work, technical pens can be a Godsend. Tattoos for instance. Personally, I wouldn\'t even attempt these with a brush. (I probably wouldn\'t attempt them full stop however:D).
I have also seen them used for marking out patterns such as tartan and harlequin checks.

Pigma Micron makes a line of technical pens that are very useful for fine detailing. You want the 005 package which comes in 6 colors ... these are .2mm and are what you\'re looking for. They are available at most hobby & craft stores and the set of six is usually around $15.

BTW, be very careful when you\'re using these ... it\'s very easy to get paint on the tips and \"clog\" them up. So, don\'t press too hard and make sure your paint is properly cured before trying to draw with them.

Jim...

Do you happen to know if the pigment is light fast?
This is my biggest concern with using these pens as the pupils on one of my old models disappeared completely after about six months. Easily remedied, but it made me think about spending weeks drawing complex tattoos....;)

Thanks for the info on the pens , from what I gather on google they can only be bought in the USA (or I did\'nt check far enough :p ) anyone know of similar pens in the UK ?

found a company in the UK , 0.1 seems to be the smallest pen though .

I\'ve used the pens for extremely elaborate tattoos and have not had any problems with them disappearing or fading (and have been using them for almost 2 years). Maybe the miniature in question wasn\'t sealed?

Edding make some pretty good permanent lightfast pens (Profipen 1800 I think)and are easy to find in the UK. The smallest size, I believe, is 0.1 too.
One other to consider is the Pilot Drawing pen... available in 0.1 too.

HI I just got a new pen for eyes mainly. It was from Art Shop in UK and is a Staedtler pigment liner .It says its waterproof and lightfast and it was about £2..Oh and its 0.05. Eh I think thats pretty fine.

 18/0 ? And I thought I was half-crazy for using a 10/0... How small do brushes get, by the way ? 50/0 ? More ?
