Brutal voting

Is it me or has the voting got really brutal recently?

People have commented before on how brutal the top ten is, but it seems to be really harsh at the moment.

I\'ve been closely watching the top 10 last 7, and the 8-10 range minis and I have to say there seems to be a lot of work that is being underated.

As soon as anything gets in the top 10 it gets voted down hard, Alexi_Z\'s last piece was knocked down quite a bit.

Now I\'m not saying the scores are drastically off, but it does seem harder and harder to get a high score.

Where I\'m going with this is that my admiration for the 9+ painters has really gone up, getting those scores is really hard.

Why is the top ten last seven so fierce? Don\'t tell me it\'s evil snipers....:flip:

I doubt our average sniper even knows about top 10 last 7.

IMO this is purely peer pressure folks....:D

*EDIT* The example you gave trev...it\'s a well painted ork on a plain, warped base. IMO it has the mark it deserves...At 8.8 it is only 1.2 points from \'perfection\'...IMO that is possibly more than it deserves....subjectivity is a terrible thing;)

I agree, a lot of very good minis are underrated, i.e. i\'m a fan of scibor and his great freehands on bretonnia stuff, also the nurgle lord of malleusminiart recently gone relatively low on scores and many others.
But take it easy, we cannot do nothing about that and the voting situation of minis under the 8 is even worse as i\'ve learned personally :D

My tuppence worth: Re the model you linked, it\'s a well painted model with various techniques done very well. But the red has \'pinked out\', to me that is not a good thing on any model, especially on an Orc.

That would be my subjective opinion and lead to my subjective mark being lower than if the red had stayed red...

Yup, I agree. It\'s rough at the top.

And my personal opinion is that the score doesn\'t really matter that much. Painters whose minis that end up with 9+ scores are pretty darn good painters - and they ought to know it, even without the score mundane viewers give to their minis.

I can only speak for myself, but I\'m here just for the comments I get.

It just seems that quite a few people (not counting you, Trevor) are getting really upset if their mini\'s don\'t get the score they believe it should deserve. Is it just me or why can\'t I understand the reasons for this?

I pretty much agree with what Finn and others have said here. I think the particular mini you linked to have basically the score it deserves and it\'s not a bad one.

BTW, Trevor, I spotted your comment and I didn\'t mean the stone looked unreal. It\'s just that a smooth stone like that looks quite nondescript and pretty much like a grey blob. It\'s a shame on such a good looking mini to have an uninteresting base. That\'s what I meant. Perhaps I should have explained further, but I didn\'t want to rant on too much about the only thing I didn\'t like... And I didn\'t knock off any points for it. Hope Chortos isn\'t offended!

I think this is only a good thing, the highest mark is ten and the standard of painting keeps getting better, we can\'t raise the scale of the marks past ten so the marks models get are gonna have to drop.

@ Ritual, aaah, makes sense now.

You do see some dumb comments on minis sometimes though, like \"Sorry I have to drop a point off because thats just not the right shade of green for an orc\"

aaarrgggh! Its a fantasy mini, how on earth can there be a \"right\" colour. A colour might look wrong, or garish or whatever, but it can\'t be wrong... lol

I think peoples problem with the scores is that they spend hours doing a mini and it looks good and down the local game store they are considered a painting god, then they post here and can\'t work out why they can\'t even get a 7.

i have to say - i look foreward to complaining about my score being that \'low\'! the day i get anything above an 8.... anyway you can\'t give half marks for that sort of thing so maybe (i know i do) people go lower rather than higher - keeps those damned taleneted ones on their toes!!

Yep, stuff has got to be really exceptional to get into the nines now. Seems you need a Golden Demon challenging mini to get there. I certainly feel that there\'s a \'seen it, voted on it\' attitude, and unless your piece has a huge wow factor - scratchbuild, superb conversion or absolutely flawless, innovative paintjob - you are \'condemned\' to getting eights...:)

Just means everyone has to raise their game even further....... aaaargh!

It\'s a case of this site being a \"Victim\" of it\'s own success.

There are so many high quality painters from all over the world posting pictures here that the painters who wow people locally aren\'t getting the \"highlighting\" (Pun intended).
When you have the likes of Allan C , Cyril, Jen Haley , Bragon etc etc... posting on here the expectation of quality becomes higher. Hence the seemingly harsher scores.
Those figures in the 7 brackets isn\'t to be sneezed at.
Anything above an 8 is usually damn fine work.
But the stuff in the 9 regions is what I regard to be Competition level stuff.
And of course due to the amount of Competition entrants who post up on here the standard is high.

As Scott said everyone has to raise their game even further............... (Which is alright for the younger ones, it\'s us old hacks are finding it a challenge.)

Humm wait a second Trevor..i\'ve done something similar to what you say on a malleus mini, it was an high elf lord with a completely green armor and when i say complete i mean chainmail too, for my PERSONAL taste i don\'t liked the colour, i think i have the right to have some personal taste beside the mere technical judice that on this particular mini is a \"wow\", as sometimes i paint something that can seem not right to the majority and i pay for that in term of rating ( i.e. very dark skulls or very contrasted highlights) . I think it\'s impossible that a color scheme even technically perfect is universally considered beatiful.
We can start a very long discussion on the phylosophical theory of esthetism and beauty concept, but to cut short if we can see minis as a form of art the judice imo is subjective and not objective.
I make an exemple: the majority of the people agree on the fact that Cappella Sistina in Rome is an artwork, but very fewer recognize in the Andy Warhol work that.
So to make an in-home exemple the judice on nano Dreadnought was almost universally the perfection, but a painter like Pitcube, that\'s not technically flawless but with a lot of avant-garde experimetation, have his fans too.
What\'s is better? prolly they are both worth of attention imo.
What i want to say with this? i don\'t know :D

Does it really matter? Even one knows that voting isn\'t \"fair\" on this site. Ok. I was joking. But seriously, why worry?
I think people are not only using CMON to tell how much they like a miniature, but also what they don\'t like. Some are voting harshly because; they are bored, they want to see if they can make someone cry, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera...
Not to mention, just because you post something CMON does not mean you automatically deserve good comments, or votes. Judging/voting is how you feel about something. Just my opinion.

Well, as one that only recently started to get 8\'s (lower 8\'s, mind you) consistently, I do think that the standard has risen a LOT these past year.

A high ranking mini not only has to be technically perfect, it has to be a character mini or a conversion (a converted character does remarkably well too), and also, it has to have a wide appeal to the public (everybody likes female minis).

I, for one, don\'t care that much about scores anymore, but it is certainly nice to see all the quality pieces that have been posted this year.

I\'m not worried, I just find it interesting, bear in mind I\'m talking about other peoples work here, not my own.

Certainly peoples tastes vary and thus votes will vary, I also think some people seem to get higher than they deserve. My point really was that I\'m beginning to appreciate how hard it is the get a 9+, which increases my admiration for the top painters.

Trevor i gave 10 to this mini, as i give every day many 10 to others mini, i\'m very kind with the ratings, this 8.8 is scandalous indeed and i don\'t say that just because the guy is italian as me. That can easily be a mini published on a rackham catalogue but what\'s the point?
I think Errex, Dragonsreach and Spacemunkie done a correct analisys and i still think that there\'s nothing we can do about that other than give our vote and pray it is useful.
