Building Beelphegor - Andrea 54mm Questions

Building Beelphegor right now and have some questions. I am just getting back into figures and just want to make sure I'm headed down the right path.

I have dry fitted the pieces but am figuring out I am going to have to paint the pieces for the most part before putting them together.

So the question is how many of you build some of the pieces before priming and painting and some afterward? Or is it mix of the two, build to a point and paint those things you just cannot get in with a paintbrush if you put it together?

Any overall guidance for what color primary? I know this can be a matter of preference but I want to make sure I have some idea.. White for a figure that will be mainly light colors? Black for dark colors? Gray is a good compromise?

I try to assemble as much of the miniature as possible before I start painting. If it's going to be really difficult to get to some details if I assemble first, then I will leave that piece off, but I hate doing it. I feel that the miniature will 1) stay together better with additional help from gap filler, primer and paint and 2) I don't have to worry about touching up if there are gaps that have to be filled after assembly them together.

Just make sure you don't prime over the areas that will be joined.

For priming, I nearly always prime white. But it's a matter of taste. Beelphegor, being an evil fellow, might do better primed in black since most of the colors will be dark. Even I might prime him that color even though I usually do white. I don't like gray, it's like the worst of both worlds.

I just built Beelphegor a few months ago. I assembled most of the model but I left any parts that are overlapping others separate. This model goes together well. I use grey primer 90% of the time and airbrush the basecoat on. Have fun with it. :)
