Building Confidence

I am currently painting a tau battlesuit squad (battlesuit and two drones) in se-nmm. I haven\'t even finished basecoating and already I\'m too scared to go back to my workspace. I can\'t build up enough confidence to do paint any more on these minis. I haven\'t been painting much in these last few months and I don\'t know if I\'m ready to jump to these kind of things. I used to be able to I\'m just scared to now. The more I slack the worst I get at painting and I really don\'t want that to happen.

I was abit over confident with my gamesday entry and I thought I would instantly soar to first place. I made finals but I was extremely suprised when I didn\'t even place. I guess it just kind of made me a little less willing to try new things. I still belive I deserved to win (I meen did you see the minis that actualy won for youngbloods GD LA 2006! :|~) I just don\'t know. Everyone seems to love the mini I painted (even the judges) I am just so dumbfounded. What did I do wrong?

This is where you guys come in. You have to help me inprove by the time gamesday comes back. I need insparation! I need training!

Does anyone know how I can get back to the rythm of things? It\'s really quite daunting!

Go get a random bit, a shield or something and then give it a go, that is if you cant bring yourself to paint on the model.... or paint on the model, try and get maybe one arm done, and if you dont like it, just reprime it and either try again or just paint it a regular tau color and save the Se-nmm for another day.

The main thing is go for it! what do you have to lose?

About the entry, i dont know which yours was, so i cant say for sure, but the first time i entered the GD\'s i didnt place, and i thought me model was awsome. At first i was dissapointed but in the end i came away with a better idea of the competition out there and that pushed my to new levels.

Just keep painting, thats all there is to it.

He looks under done unfortunately. Not enough highlighting and he doesn\'t \'pop\'.

The ones that won weren\'t exactly the pinnacle of technique, but they certainly catch the eye - especially the winner which even has a few little convos.

There\'s absolutely no point in trying to second guess either the judges or other competitors. Do your thing, improve, don\'t blart if you don\'t win. Sounds like sour grapes.....

Hey there\'s no need to be scared of painting a plastic mini. They\'re so small they can barely hurt you

As has been said, the only way of getting better at painting is to paint. An attitude \"Oh I can paint a winning enrty in 2 hours... if I just want\" is not helpful on the progress.
If you want to paint SE-NMM, do it. I did it after reading this article. I cursed, I repainted, but in the end I was confident with the result. Just keep your paints thin so you can always correct errors (or reprime). And don\'t expect to paint such a mini on a single afternoon. Patience is crucial.

Ok, now go and paint!! Show those damn plastic aliens that you\'re not afraid!!

Just remember at the end of the day we are just painting toy soldiers. As I said in your other thread you may not have won because the color scheme wasnt straight out of the movie.

Every one goes thru stages were they cant be fagged with painting anymore. IF its too much of a strain take a break for a couple of months. You\'ll find that after a couple of weeks you\'ll start to get the bug again.

As to your confidence problem, well you only get better with bum in seat time and if you eneter a contest expecting to win you will be dissappointed almost every time. The judges dont always pick the best mini but the one THEY like the best.

Hope you get over you prob and get back to painting soon. CMON will always be waiting to look at your stuff.
