House Building

Balsa wood is cheap (and fragile).
Shawn\'s got a point. You\'re being pretty broad in your question, here.
If you go through the forums, there\'s a number of really good tips on these things, and you might also check the articles written for any good house building tutorials. The Search button\'s good for these things, I think.

And failing this, Bob Vila\'s books, released by Time-Life can help, so long as you remember to scale everything in it down to 25-28mm. :D

i find that it\'s best if you use a polystyrene block for the basic shape (just the crap that they use to protect flat pack furniture does the trick) and build up your wall details over that using balsa and cardboard. oh and old toy parts and junk come in really hand for sci fi stuff - see some of praetorian0_1\'s stuff for examples of \'kitbashing\'

i hate to say it but the new wargames terrain book from gw actually has some really good tips in it. any other questions, pm me

not every ones favorite but...

The Games Workshop site (at least the US version) has a some good tips/tutorials on making a few buildings. At one time they even had some printable templates that your could use on some foamboard.

Supervike\'s right; the US site is actually pretty damned good when it comes to the hobby stuff, for this and many other things. For buildings specifically, this page starts with a basic, general how-to guide and then goes into detail for a Brettonian gatehouse, and this one details a plague windmill; and yes, both of the articles include downloadable, printable .pdf templates to use in recreating them yourself, if you wish.

I cant remember the guy\'s name but someone posts alot of stuff in the terrain catagory. Most of it is called \'City Fight\'. He has done some amazing things with cardboard. One guy actually did some detail on a cathederal piece (no joke) using spaghetti!!

I think foamboard is the best thing to use for buildings. But the main thing to remeber when doing terrains is that everything is usable, as long as it looks good in the end :D

I\'m seeking medieval houses (LOTR style) in fact. The main thing I need is plans and tutorials (which you(ve already given but I\'m wanting more :D)

They aren\'t hard to make for yourself, all you need to do is work out the size of the house you want and make it accordingly. All a model house is, is a box with an angled roof line. The angle of the roof is up to you, especially if you are making a medieval house- no standardisation.

The best way of learning is doing, just use a miniature as a height guide :D
