Byronic\'s WIP : DoW Army + Chaos Spearhead

I should have really started this sooner, to get more of a stage-by-stage feel, but it\'s an on-going process, so hopefully my lateness won\'t detract from the original idea too much.

I\'ve got 2 big WIPs going on at the moment, the first of which is painting up my Dogs of War army, which is going to have the theme of an army on the march in winter, every model is on a sculpted cobbled road style base, and I\'m getting to grips with the GW snow (any idvice on using this would be really welcome - especially in terms of making it look more \'wet\' and less fluffy)

I\'m painting up the spearhead for the experience, then I\'m going to E-bay it, hopefully I\'ll make a small amount of money in the process :)

Here\'s my DoW so far :

Here\'s my Chaos so far :

Since I took the pictures yesterday I\'ve brushed the snow from their cracks, and I\'ve drilled the man-eaters barrels, I\'ll attempt to get some better pictures soon, but my lighting is making it difficult, any thoughts or advice would be welcome, concerned with any part/aspect/theme/whatever :)

p.s. What weapon should I give my paymaster? :)

Hey, good to see you posting your stuff here. Well done. I like the flesh on the ogre, nice color palette.

My biggest reccomendation would be to view the \"Painting True Metallics\" article by Matt Sterbentz in the articles section of the forum. It\'s really good and your metal work will look much better. If you did the front rank of your chaos warrior like that they\'d look really money.

I\'m STILL struggling with metallics but the basecoat/drybrush and call it a day method will only get you so far. I STRONGLY reccomend giving the extra effort as outlined by Matt a try. Mine aren\'t \"there\" yet but they look ten times better then when I just drybrushed away.

Good Luck! Maybe one day we\'ll meet up at a tourny. Of course, I would win though.

**Note** The top picture is with a flash, the lower is closer to its colour in real life, but it didn\'t pick up its shinyness!

There\'s my tester for armour scheme on chaos knight, any c+c would be really appreciated.

I\'ve still got to figure how it\'s going to tie in with the warriors (apart from the base)

Help me with your wisdom!

I really like the tones you\'re using for the horses and the skin of the marauders. Good job on them so far. For the metals, may I suggest a wash or two followed by some highlights? That\'ll really make the armor stand out.

Great job though so far!

I agree completely with redarmy, I love the tones you are using, It makes the units look like they have been through many battles.

Great work so far.

Been way too long, however I\'m now on holiday before exams start, so i should be able to get on the updating fairly regularly having been inspired again by the quality and entertainment in general of the work in progress forum :)

So far my DoW are on a bit of a hiatus, mainly due to me \'testing\' out the WoC and realising how much I like playing with them :D - progress with these is as follows, will be updating with pictures soon;

5 marauder cav, very nearly finished, only details to go, all based

12 warriors - weapons and details to go, champ converted to an exalted, mainly decided he\'d fulfil this role after putting him on a big rock and making him 2 times taller than everyone else with 2 hand weps. Don\'t really rate warriors as a core choice, so I\'m going to be fancing up a couple of models and playing these as chosen - All based

5 Knights, horses need details, as do riders, not based.

1 Nurgle sorc on foot, undercoated

Just bought 5 more marauder cav to fill my 2nd core slot, horses all filed and put together, undercoated only, will be my project along with this guy:

Will be putting the standard shield on him, left it of for painting though, thinking of going nurgle themed, and having a bit of ooze coming out of the holes in the armour which usually have the spikes coming out, let me know if you\'ve any suggestions for the model or base before I get painting - (it\'ll be painted dark greyish +snow).

Once I include some pictures of my warrior unit you\'ll get the idea of the theme, - v dark blueish arm with highlights, and bluey grey fur+red cloaks, not \'mark themed\' looking at all, at the moment wondering whether nurgle will be doable whilst keeping coherency with the rest of the army, although base will aid that greatly.

Looking to spend a fair bit of time on him, so all suggestions welcome as ever :)!

p.s. Got a cheap fold out photobox thing from ebay, these things rock, no glare, and semi decent pics with a cheap camera, awesome!

I like this a lot... it\'s making me think I\'d like to paint some Chaos after my Brets are done...

Thanks for the comments Thomgirl and freakinacage :), apologies for the slow response.

It\'s been a while since I last posted, my exams are over though, so full steam ahead with the chaos :)

I\'ll update properly when I get back from climbing, here\'s the state of the majority of the stuff that is started so far

Chaos warriors : http://www.coolminiornot.com/222399

Rest of it:
(Sorry about the image size, it was either too big, or tiny, and nowhere in the middle thanks to photobucket)

The warriors and first unit of horsemen are pretty much entirely finished, and the knights are getting close, although everything needs details.

I\'m trying to go for a fairly good and consistent army style of painting, so all tips/criticisms/thoughts are entirely welcome :)

I\'ll give a proper update in a few hours :)

Edit @ few hours later:
Right so here\'s the stuff I\'ve got to paint:

10 chaos warriors --------- all but done (with 1 spare!)

10 warhounds ---------- not even started, and I need 15 - I will probably make up the numbers with spare goblin wolves

10 marauder horsemen --- 5 all but done, 5 done except riders - Again probably need 5 more

10 chosen ------------------ 2 started, rest need assembling (+converting, - tentacles!) Also need to decide a mark, or make a selection of standard bearers

5 knights -------------------- All but finished again, bone + details all that needs to be done, I\'ve got 5 more, but I want to avoid using them in lists and keep them for converting

1 Nurgle sorc on foot ----- Undercoated, looking for somethign to make him stand out a little -like a base idea or something

10 Marauders -------------- Not sure if I\'m going to use these guys or not, as i\'m pushed for time if it\'s not on my lists it\'s not a priority, undecided whether I like these guys yet or not

Right, so that\'s what I own, I need to decide whether I\'m going to be using a warshrine or spawn and convert whichever I choose, I need a nurgle sorc on a steed, either a discrider or jugger exalted (I\'ve got a jugger but I also have a sigvald, and think with a bit of converting he\'d look pimp on a disc)

that\'ll take me up to around 2000 points, as for now I\'m going to finish of my knights and marauder horsemen, then reward myself with a character or two- which should have me with a legit force, broken up with my chaos hounding (not a huge fan of the hound models which seem to have been designed with a seal line running right down their middles, green stuffing is in order)

Unfortunately I never take a daemonic mount in my lists, which is a shame as I like the model, and the tentacle/weapon conversion I did on mine before realising this, I think it\'d be cheeky to call him a juggernaut - any suggestions what to do with him would be welcome, I was wondering if I could use him somewhere in a warshrine conversion.

I live for your c+c, all welcome! :)
