Byronics Chaos Army Diary (Picture heavy)

@ shadzar, I\'m not massively \'into\' painting the horsemen, but they\'re needed, I fun up the bases to make myself more interested in them, then do a bit of them between everything else in the army (they\'re the only things which I don\'t enjoy painting)

Tah Ghaffasa, glad you like them :D

I hope you guys will forgive me for copying this straight from another forum, so apologies if you\'ve seen it before, it\'s 2 posts jammed together so I don\'t spam up this board with my updates:

Post1:
Quick update, I\'ll be doing some more work this evening, any feedback on the well would be great, sigwald will be standing on the disc held up by tentacles coming from the middle of it.

Nearly finished 2nd baselayer of painting on the horses, I\'ll get distracted and do some more on the chars prob, couple of pictures anyway:

(I thought I\'d include a picture of the hole in my finger :D)

Work for sigwald (exalted tzeetch on disc):

Thanks for looking, I\'ll probably update again before bed :p

http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq59/I-hatephotobucket/DSCI1559.jpg < the reason why holding models hurts currently, I blame welsh caves..

Post 2: (someone advised me to try other water effects, not rating the GW one - opinions on this would be great, or advice on a cheap alternative for someone in the UK of course :D)

Thanks for the advice :) although gutted that I forked out on this, I put it in my snow mix to make it dry really hard, so if it\'s terrible I guess I can get some of it used up that way :S I put a very thin layer in the bottom yesterday, it seems to have gone o.k, it looks dry, but it\'s not completely rock solid - does it dry as hard as plastic? - at the moment it\'s kind of like greenstuff. Would you say that it\'s that bad that I shouldn\'t bother with it?

Yeah I wrapped the disc so I could position the tentacles so they looked like they were wrapping round it more closely, I\'m still pretty ashamed of the freehand on the disc though, any tips for improving it, should I just practice on spare flat surfaces or something?

Another quick question; are there any drawbacks to drying the water stuff in front of a fan to speed it up? Like would it end up drying the top too fast so the bottom didn\'t set for example.

My friend just started collecting vamps, and he\'s offered me cart blanch on his bits, I think I\'ll put a zombie torso/head or something like that in it, as long as it wouldn\'t look to squeezed/clumsy, I\'d love to have a tentacle grabbing something by the leg appearing out of it, but I don\'t have a suitable model :s I\'ll have a think about it at the gym.

Pictures will be up soon :)

(It\'s quite that milky in real life, the flash/desk lamp are exaggerating it I think.

As always c+c is welcome!

Could anyone recommend me a nice cheap water effect product please? (I\'m in the u.k) The GW stuff isn\'t working.

(If someone has a link to the website where their favourite is that\'d be great also :))

Someone on another forum recommended this website, but couldn\'t recommend a product.

http://www.barrule.com/workshop/scratch%20builders%20paradise/water%20wasser%20aqua.html

Also found a good selection here, but no idea about products or prices :D

http://www.ontracks.co.uk/index.php?page=catalogue&cat=76

Any help would be really appreciated, it\'s to go in the well 1 post up, couple of CM deep.

About time I chime in. Been following this thread and I must say that the army is looking great so far!

As far as the water effects go, from your first link there, I use the C1211 - Realistic Water 16 oz. which I believe is the Woodland Scenics stuff. It\'s great, you just have to make sure to seal off everything that it may leak out of. Other than that it dries very clear and even. Much better and cheaper than the GW stuff.

Thanks loads man :)

Unfortunately they\'re out of stock :s, I\'ve sent them an e-mail.

Made a little progress;

Kind of glad that I rushed my list for carnage out, and had to include this guy because I owned it, absolutely love the model, the post and feel of it are brilliant, just hope I can do it justice, lots and lots of metal :)

I figure I\'ll do 1 stage on the horses between everything else I do, or I\'ll never get them done :)

Criticism always welcome.

I\'ll probably edit stuff into this post to avoid spamming up the board with posts, hopefully I\'ll get a lot done before I go out this evening :)

If you are not looking for it to be extremely deep (like a stream or puddle) then I would highly recommend Future Floor Polish. Extremely cheap, and you can get it at the supermarket.

Thanks man, unfortunately I need this to be a little over 2cm deep :(

Barrule got back to me and said they\'d have new stock in next week, hopefully their postage is speedy, as I\'d like to have it finished for my tourny.

As I checked it was all sealed I could just use normal water, do you think I\'d get best army if my well featured real sea-monkeys or maybe even small fish? ^_^

Hopefully there\'ll be a little update later tonight

Looking very impressive. I really like the way the rocks on those bases match up. Sculpting looks good too. Keep it up!

Update here we go :)

(It\'s really late, so this is shamelessly a shamelessly copied thread from another forum, that doesn\'t mean you shouldn\'t answer my criticism/advice plea at the bottom though, other people\'s opinions would be really helpful at the moment)

I doodled a bit at work today and took my chaos bitsjar and a couple of chosen to work (forgetting glue was a major fault with my plan to do conversions sat in the gatehouse :S), so I sketched out a couple of ideas, 1 of which resulted in the spear wielding dude - who I\'m quite happy with-**guy, the other ending up with the butcher guy with a head in 1 hand and a dock-of axe in the other, not so happy with this guy. 1 problem with the chosen models (asides from the majority being depressingly static) is that they\'re so huge than anything normal sized seems dwarfed on them - e.g. the head in this guys hand :s

I also held up a normal warrior shield next to them, looks widdy!

Anyways, some pictures of progress - in no particular order:

Chosen so far:

Thanks to feedback from another forum this guy is going to have his scythe extended, and his other hand will be supporting it, I think it\'ll look much better.
DSCI1585.jpg

New guy #1
DSCI1586.jpg

New guy #2** Serious amount of pinning and chopping went on here, also right hands are apparently extremely rare :S
DSCI1587.jpg

Absolutely hating painting up these guys
DSCI1588.jpg

Any opinions on this as a basic scheme? Obviously I\'ll be spending a fair bit more time on each model, really open to suggestions here. - Is it too plain/too shiny/not worn enough, anything?

DSCI1591.jpg

In general I\'d really like people to slate me with any criticisms/suggestions for improvement with the stuff I\'m working on now, bring my chosen, tzeench disc rider, demonic mount sorc, and warshrine (unstarted) - I\'ve kind of saved best till last and I\'m really hoping for these guys to be something I\'m really proud of, also I\'ve got 2 weeks ish till Carnage so there\'s still time to do bits and bobs on the other stuff.

Criticisms of anything so far would be great, however picky it seems - national appraise my WoC army week starts now, be ruthless, even if it\'s something like - \'I think it\'d be better if you did this to every single one of your bases\' type thing, hit me with all you\'ve got! - This forum is full of talent, and I\'ll do everything I can to leech of it

Well, to be honest, I am afraid of chaos warriors. I have held off on starting an army with them in it becuase I have no idea where I would start.

I think that something a bit darker... so not so shiny armour while making it bling... if that makes any sense. Maybe some rusty armour... I picture the warriors of the north as being sea farers, meaning the armour would be exposed to a lot of salt water. That might help bring some color to these guys.

Still looking awesome.

I really like the Idea of that man, I\'ve never tried weathered armour before, so it may be a bit above me, but I\'ll try out a test piece and see what advice people can give me, as long as it doesn\'t take too long per model I\'m definitely going to give it a go :D

Time for some more shockingly taken on desk under a bad lap pictures!

(On the plus side these guys are getting closer to being finished to a degree where I can stop doing them and go back over them if I get some spare tie in the future, yay!)

So far I can see 3 metal bits I missed on the headless horsemen yesterday night already.

Keep the suggestions rolling in guys, thanks for all of them so far :)

p.s. Ordered in some water effect from barrule a couple of days ago, can\'t wait for it to arrive, also ordered a little series 7 brush, sexxy!!

Thanks for the feedback so far, really helpful, keep it coming, whatever your thoughts I want \'em :)

Agreed with you so much that this is how my paintscheme for them will go mouskiller :):

rusty-1.jpg

This is my first attempt at weathering/damage so any tips would be really appreciated, something I\'ve already noticed is that the wash I used in the recesses was too blue, so needs a bit of green added.

Right, so here\'s the unit so far (I got some brass rod today, this stuff is ace!)

Who looks better as the champ? Mr Wulfric or Mr gamesday? I think Mr gamesday may be the easiest to paint, wulfric is covered in a right assortment of faffy objects.

All c+c welcome :D

I\'ll edit this post with a couple more pictures this evening hopefully :) mr gamesday isn\'t in good light, he and the chosen are approaching being finished.

Here\'s mr gamesday, pleasure to paint, although I didn\'t think I could pin the arms, and they fell of twice :D

2 full days of painting to go, screeewwweeeed :D

Edit: chosen thus far

Did some greenstuffing I was quite happy with on the standard bearer, then wrecked it with the shoulder pad thingy, which is well scrappy on top :S
