Byronic's quest to become a better painter.

Hello all, I've had a couple of army threads on here in the past etc, but now I'm starting a new one exclusively with the intent of picking your ever-so-knowledgeable brains for tips, and posting up pieces where I've tried/am trying something new in an attempt to push the quality of my painting/modelling. This Christmas I'll have been painting for 5 years and one my my resolutions this year was to improve my single-figure painting (amongst other things which I'm sure will crop up. Occasionally I might include a couple of pictures of commission work or of my own Ogre army (progress on that front is slow).

Hopefully my Ogres will be of a standard where they'll be in contention for a painting award if I take them to a tournament, that's the aim at any rate.

Anyway here's a base which I worked on yesterday night, I have no idea how it is going to rank up with my Ogres, or even if a character is going to stand on it nicely, it was such a nice bit of root that I wanted to do something it (I think it's hawthorn or gorse).

For colour reference the character on top of it would be painted in a scheme similar to these guys (I'm thinking just with more blood...)

I'm thinking a couple of little blue flowers would look nice on the base, anyone have any recommendations as to where to buy something appropriate/how to make it?

All comments and criticisms very welcome (that's why I made the thread, don't hold back!), if more pictures of a certain aspect etc would be useful just say and I'll see what I can do.
