Can i be immune to ill health (chemical question)

Im a swim teacher and spend 30 hours a week in chlorenated water and a further 10 teaching on the side where bromine is used. My entire family have been struck down with colds, flu ect. So my question.

Does being in such an environment a lot of the time contribute to me not being ill in a few years. Last time i was sick was christmas 2008 and it was a minor cold, or is it because i am away from said disease ridden family!!

Chlorine can help, but it probably isn't the only factor.
Physical fitness, natural immune system, body temperature, activity, personal hygiene, diet... all factors.
I don't get sick very often, either.

no, the bromine/chlorine will only stop you getting infections form the water. everything else is just luck/lifestyle. if you are fit, it will help

Not sure, but xmas 2008 seems quite recent to me. 18ish months? Last time I remember being ill was....must have been 6-7 years ago, because I remember being too ill to even have a smoke, and I quit smoking 5-6 years ago. Last time I went to the doctor a couple of years back was to get a mole checked out, it was normal, so I don't think that counts.

You must have a better immune system than your family. Also as being more healthy will increase chances of staying well then as you work as a swim teacher you might be around fitter people more of the time. But hey I'm not a biologist :wasntme:

Technically exposure to Chlorine and Bromine forms acid in the lungs and causes damage to them, making you more prone to lung infections such as pneumonia. They are toxic which is why we use them (in one ton containers, no less) to control biotics (bugs and plants) in cooling towers and such.
