Can I borrow someones eyes?

OK being red/green colourblind as I am I have immense trouble distinguishing shades of red, especially dark ones So choosing to paint an army of predominantly red marines was probably not such a wise choice. But then playing Dawn of War will do that to a person.....

I can ask the Mrs or whoever whether I\'ve got big blobs of red in the wrong place but to get a better idea how well I\'m doing requires the input of someone who actually knows what they\'re looking at. So bearing in mind that I\'m painting by theory here can someone please tell me whether I\'m on the right track with this colour scheme?

I\'m not expecting this guy to pick up any awards here, he is just rank and file after all, but I\'d appreciate any advice you can throw at me.

its looking ok.. youve missed a few spots on the hand legs & backpack.. but for being color blind i think your doing a verygood job.. the should pad looks awesome very nice free hand

Looks real good. My friend is color blind as well. His best every paint job was a green horse.

i\'m colour blind to. it\'s a right pain in the arse tbh. once painted the 54mm kal jericho figure with a brown coat. looked great and then someone said - why\'s it brown?!! gah

So far as the paints being in the right places, you\'ve got it down. It\'s hard to tell whether you\'re painting highlights and having problems with where they start/end or whether it\'s just patchy coverage with a brighter red, but the transition/color consistency in certain areas needs some tidying. For example, on the back of the left greave the lower half is a brighter red and the upper is dark red with no transition between the two shades; the top and bottom areas of the back right thigh are lighter red and there\'s a diamond-shaped patch of dark slightly overlapping the \"inset\" panel; and his \"skirt\" is kinda patchy looking, the top band moreso than the lower.

I can definitely sympathize with you being colorblind - my best friend is red-green colorblind as well and while there\'s some shades he can recognize on figures I paint, a lot of stuff that he says is the same hue are different colors across a figure. I can only imagine the challenge of painting in all colors you have trouble differentiating. To that end: have you tried playing with the color saturation, or tried outright shifting the hue of pictures of the guy in a photo editing program to colors that you can easily distinguish among? Probably time-intensive, but I\'m guessing it might help you self-correct so long as you use a limited palette of \"known\" red colors.

I have the same problem, so this looks pretty good to me.

If paint bottles didn\'t have labels, this hobby would be completely inaccessible to me. Even so, my current project is mostly different shades of brown, which quickly start to look the same to me.

It\'s a bit of both. I can only tell where I\'ve painted up to with the highlight because I can see where the paint is still wet. I think I went a bit too far with the top highlight hence the poor transition As for the patchy coverage I haven\'t got a hope in hell of seeing that so I suppose more coats are in order. ATM I\'m going from a black undercoat followed by red gore followed by various stages blending red gore to blood red. I\'m not even sure if those two colours are compatible for blending??? I\'m pretty sure I don\'t want to be using scab red though....

Hehe, Ravenguard... I might be better off with black armour it looks about the same to me

I do my reds from black like this:
Scab Red
black wash/ink
Scab Red
Red Gore (with maybe one intermediate mix with Scab Red before)
black wash.ink
Red Gore
Red Gore/Blood Red mixes
Blood Red edge highlights
Red Gore Wash
Blood Red edge highlights

May be too much for an army so you could probable get away with something like
Red Gore
Black wash
Red Gore/Blood Red mixes
Blood Red edge highlights
Red Gore wash

A trick you could use to figuring out where to place the highlights would be to look at marines in different colours (ie blue) and see where they place the shading, intermediates, and highlights and just make a mental map and just switch out the colours for red shades when you paint. Hope I\'ve helped somehow lol...
