Can I get some constructive criticism on this ork?

I just finished painting my warboss and, while I\'m fairly satisfied with it, I feel that there is significant room for improvement in my painting.

Could some of you take a look at it and offer any suggestions as to what I need to learn?

I think we can take \'better photography\' as a given.

ill be honest you\'ve got some good things going on here. the ork skin is great and the striped pants are perfect. what i dont get is that you have this dirty looking gun... and metal on his pk and shirt thats just not as rusted. i would rework some of that, and possibly even use some more orange highlights to really rust it up. the blue coils on the pk are nice and all... but are too much of a base color...i would add a highlight and a darker tone to parts as well. as for the skin, a very light.... and i mean light selective glaze of liche purple in the crevasses of the skin would really make it pop.

finally as a whole, this mini is a great begtinning and is deserving of a 7 or 7.5. i think with a little more time and love it could reach the 8\'s. keep it up and welcome to the forums.

overall its a very nice looking model, your after criticism though so ill do what i can :p

-stripes- the stripes look very good but there are some parts that i feel can be improved. the stripes on the back of his pants are noticeable thicker than those on the front and the stripes on his vest are a little bit crooked.

-loin cloth- majority of the loin cloth looks very good but i feel the deepest shadows near the top of the cloth could benefit with more shading.

-skin- his face is perfect, there isn\'t really anything i can see to do to improve it, the back of his bicep however and his shoulder blade aren\'t to the same standard, they look good and very similar but it almost looks as though a wash was applied for the final stage and came out a little blotchy on the back.

-metal- I\'m not overly fond of the metal, majority i feel could benefit from weathering and the gun barrel that is weathered i feel has to much, i would try to hit a medium, do all the metal with half as much weathering as is on the gun barrel. on the upside i think the application of the weathering is perfect, its just overdone.

-squares- like the squares, think they look fairly uniform and the off-white is nice, the one thing i will say is that i think the edges could be cleaned up a touch, very, very minor.

-boots- last thing ill add is that the boots look as though they had an ink wash, it looks good but i think an application of some sort of dull-coat or matte varnish to take the shine out of the cracks would enhance them.

i know this seems like a huge list but there all small things that will improve the overall effect of your model i feel, hope some of this was helpful :p

to give him more \"life\" i would go for more color-variation on the skin, i use thin layers of paint (glaces) with all kinds of colours; especially brown, purple, reds and greys.

as mentioned more shadig all over the mini as well as more \"extreme\" highligt, i go all way from almost black to almost white all over (matter of taste i suppose:rolleyes: )

anyway i think its a solid piece already. keep it up!:)

Overall a nice mini and the comments the others a have left have thier merits. Personally I think the cloth parts look a little to neat and clean for an Ork and the base could do with a bit more contrast, it doesn\'t look like it has has any shading or highlighting.

On the subject of photography it\'s in focus and light enough ( a damn good start:D ). A simple way to improve would be to move the sheet of paper further away from behind him so that you don\'t see the shadow cast by the mini, better still look in the articles as to making a simple light box.

well, i have to say, a very good start indeed.

and as has been said before only very minor point of criticism, those point i see also have a certain uniformity to them....

1) your blues (with a possible exception on the pants) seem to have too liitle in the way of contrast, not enough shading and highlighting.

2) the same goes for your browns (including the \"overdone\" rust) more contrast, and on the rust, moderation is key....

other than that, great mini.... great choice of colors, nice and bold.
i like the skincolor, i\'ve always been a fan of the more natural looking brownish greens
the not so rusty metal on the gun and flamer barrel looks great too.

keep it up

yellow his teeth.

The blue cable wrap for the claw is too clean to be that abused. It is also the same blue as the other 3 areas of blue. I understand limiting your pallet, but those blues should be similar, not the same.

I like the rest of it.

I agree with the above plus overall the slightly gloss look is a bit off putting. One way around this is to get a brush on matt varnish, they tend to be more matt than spray on I find OR you could photograph before you varnish.

The photos look fine but you could learn how to take out the shadows through editing.

I like it. Perhaps just a touch more tonal range, a bit less rust on the gun and some purples in the darkest skin tones. I\'d lose all the blue other than the stripes on his pants as well - draws your eye too much.

Other than that, good stuff
