Canis Wolfborne re-start.. (?)

Ok. My younger brother had a go at painting a canis wolfborne (gw metal). His skills are slightly below his aspirations, and by his own admission he's made a bit of a mess of it. Two re-sprays has left the thing absolutely caked in paint. From a distance, and nestled within a wolves army, it doesn't look too bad in my opinion, but he's to embarressed to take it to a game table. So, he's brought it to me to "make it good". (his faith in my skills may be somewhat misplaced, at such is life, lol.) ....my question is thus; Another re-spray is out of the question. There is far too much paint on there already. Ideally i'd like to strip all the paint off and do a complete re-start. How might I achieve this without damaging the model? I've never had to attempt anything like this before, so I have no idea what kind of solvents/processes are involved in taking a metal model down to its bones. My first thought is ordinary paint stripper, but i'm thinking that's like killing a mouse with a shot-gun. ...anyone got any suggestions?

Brake fluid for metal minis is fine
Fairy Power Spray
Dettol

For dettol and brake, soak for 24hrs then scrub with an old toothbrush. Wear protective gloves

Fairy, not entirely sure what you do. I think spray sparingly then scrub after 20mins, dont quote me on that though

Er, how to strip is a slightly common topic so see the Sticky Thread of much stickiness.

Rugne made a thread highlighting the Fairy Power Spray. I bought some off E-Bay being too lazy to try a series of shops that may or may not carry it. Tried it on metals, and plastics, worked a treat. It doesn't affect the plastic, nor any glues.
You squirt it on, leave the mini a while, then give it a good scrub after 20mins or so with an old toothbrush. Could leave it longer, not for much greater effect, but it won't impair the miniature if you forget about it for a while (I left some experimental figs in a pot of it overnight). Might have to pay greater attention to hard to reach recessess with a more pointed tool, like a cocktail stick, but it does the job. Doesn't smell too bad at all either. Don't half make your fingers sticky though - wouldn't recommend licking your fingers though, it tastes unsuprisingly foul.

Granddad!
Cellulose thinners is the quickest way to strip metal, but make sure the area is well ventilated, soak it in a large jar for 10-20 mins, then scrub with a toothbrush and wash your hands after and always replace the lid!
Halfords is your best bet, unless you have a place that stocks wood finishing products, waxes, polishes etc or a car paints etc

Go to your harware store and buy some paint stripper. Check the back label...it should say it contains dichloromethane. That stuff will strip acrylic paint from metals wonderfully. Soak for 10 minutes, scrub off. Pick out the worst with a small needle point then resoak for 20 minutes and wash clean. It'll be just like it left the mould.

I also think something like concentrated sodium hydroxide will work aswell. I may have to try that on some plastics though its bloody dangerous stuff in inexperienced hands.

Don't look down on me just because you use fancy nailvarnish remover to destroy any hint of your 'pretty woman' sessions Mike :p

1: I leave the nail varnish on. Much more fun.
2: I look down on you cos for the moment I'm taller than you.

Mr Muscle Oven cleaner works a treat. Tried it - metal looked like new afterwards

Spray and leave - use old toothbrush to scrub - rinse

Better solution

Nail polish remover, Brake fluid, Dettol, and paint stripper will not only strip away the paint it will also damage any plastic. They are all corrosive. Possibly damage your sink, eyes, and sinuses. Plus you have to work with in a well ventilated area and it can’t be disposed of down the drain. I suggest you try simple green(Industrial cleaners). I have used it and it works well. Some advantages are it doesn’t melt plastic, burn your skin, and it is affordable. Soak for about twelve to twenty-four hours or longer depending on the amount of paint you need to remove. Scrub paint off with a firm non-abrasive brush then rinse with water and repeat if needed. Good luck and happy painting!

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Thought i'd post with my progress. ...i decided to go for the dettol method. Mainly because i found a bottle of it in the cupboard. Lol. ..i took apart the canis wolfborn and plonked all the bits in an empty glass nescafe jar. Filled it up with dettol and put on the lid. Left it for the whole day and checked on it in the evening. The liquid was all dark in colour, and there were loads of chunks of paint in it. ..i tipped the whole affair into an empty ice-cream tub and scrubbed the bits with a tooth brush. 20 minutes later all the paint was gone. Washed the bits with hot soapy water, and now they look as good as new. ....i'm not sure about how the other methods fair, but since i had a good experience with dettol, i'll probably be using it in the future. Got some old dreadnoughts in a case somewhere that could do with a re-start also.
