They are perfect reference for highlights, assesing NMM, cloth, Skin tones AND baseing. I even have a new appreciation for frozen the skin tones are fantastic you see them but only a painter notices (watched at least twice a week with my 2 year old). Its amazing what you can pause now, not like VHS! RaWhahahaha.

So the next few months will be Crazy!
2 birhtday minis to paint
1 Feb mini painting (twilight knight)
40 ww1 ANZAC and Turkish troops.

I have great pleasure in being part of a giant diorama project for commerating WW1. The diorama is going to be showing the battle of Chunuk Bair where ANZAC troops fought against the Ottoman defenders. You can read more about whats going on for the 100th anniversary of chunuk Bair and the Mustering the troops Blog about painting 4000 miniatures!

My first 10 are ANZAC troops digging with shovels. Plenty of preparation, I had to pin the wrists at the handle end of the shovel and file back the shoulder joints a fair bit to get them to fit. The sculpts are quite nice but the casting is poor bubbles wrinkles and general imperfections over enough to make it just past that "I cant handle any more prep feeling".

After a good wash I glued them together.

I primed them and filled the imperfections and joints.

As there are 4000 to paint, the goal is pretty simple; nothing too crazy and a good standard of base colours and washes. I put a few wrapping bandages on a couple bad arms too to hide the imperections. In case your wondering they are 54mm scale, sorry for the last pic was getting dark and the back ground didint help.

I paint my thumb.
My back and arms hurts just looking at them, I despise shovelling.
Not sure how the sprues work, or where your conversion skills are at, but the unit would look better if they had different position, right now they are all too similar poses; at least on out of ten would have the shovel higher than his shoulders, one could be holding his back, etc.

Bit more progress, nothing too crazy couple glazes (yellow, red, grey) on face after wash, over expectations of quality with the minial highlights. If you can imagin 4000 minis painted buy 100 people you dont want to have too much variation. It must be a huge diorama!

Alrigh this time I have Turks to paint. I know DR mentioned auto primer and it seems to be a lot better than standard primer for metal, Duh thats what its made for you are thinking. How many of you have tried it? I would recomend it :)
attachment.php

Auto etch primer thinly sprayed. Filled the shoulder gaps with putty.

1 highlight 1 shadow.

should come up alright with a spot wash on folds etc.

You may have read that Zabs Dwarf base didnt set, I should have taken a pic of the failed resin. It was salvageable so cleaned it up and this is round 2

I feel a bit better about this one too, way less ink in it, its pretty much clear Im hoping the blue thats on the sea bed is enough to give the feeling. I have not put the ice shelf on yet. Zab and I discussed it and think it was a factor in the last pour not setting( not enough air to cure it).

Have fun :)

Your a machine at the moment with all this batch painting, and for a worthy cause.
I use auto primer for plastics and metals and never had a problem and a darn sight cheaper than hobby sprays.
Glad you were able to save the base and as much surface to air as possible to help setting is a good idea
