LOl you got it BAM, Im going to get cracking tonight, once I have finished work and got the kids to bed. I got my birthday present a while ago too, I plan on doing something similar to scalemodelmedic and his falcon. Led lights and a repaint and what ever else takes my fancy. It will probabily take a while as its not on the high priority list like the Dwarves and birthday presents.

Its the same line as the falcon and was less than $20. Im pretty impressed with the quality v cost. Its all I need to have some fun and get something I can hang above the computer area until the Mrs shoots me down!

A quick SBS on what I learnt for rust effects.
attachment.php

rust coloured pigments applied to the base, then fixed with matt coat and thinners.
** What I should have done was put the matt coat on first then dabbed the pigments on. later you will see it looks way too the same colour.**
attachment.php

Using liquid mask to dab on some future chipps. I made them too big, lucky this is a test. used a piece of sponge and tweezers.
attachment.php

top coat to show pannels.
attachment.php

add a few fancy bits, washes and touch ups. An AB and a stencil makes work easy! I also put a few dabs on the top coat so the numbers and yellow line get chipped.
attachment.php

use bluetack to remove masking fluid.
attachment.php

Use thinners to loosen the pigment and pull the pigment in the required direction. Note to self and any one else dont use too much thinner other wise it will end up like the above pic. I went around the chips with some grey to higlight. Too much rust that is plain in colour is the result.

Findings
A pretty good test to see if I can pull it off on the real base.
what I need to change on the real base;
1. Varied pigment aplication thinners first
2 Smaller chips
2. Using less thinners and a seperate brush to drag the pigments once loose is also needed.

Happy painting.

Slave 1 is awesome - get to work on that! Nice work on the test base - keep those colors faded and washed out. It might help to just seal the pigments under and then apply the same colors on top with the binder to do the streaking after chipping. I think you'll have more control that way and there is less risk of ruining the pj on top. That's how i did the sign on my dwarf with the salt and hair spray technique.

I'm going to finish the dwarves next I had a little break through with nmm and can do it a bit faster now with a better result, axes and nmm here we come.

Applying the mix of matt coat and thinners on to the base then adding the pigments has worked a lot better, larger range of rust colours visible.

I think it looks pretty good, liquid mask next :)
Happy painting.
Planned freehand to sit over the top of the door and slightly to the right. (Russian Federal Bureau of Aeronautics) You can see the logo on the tail of a plane in the reference pic too (wip page25).

Happy painting.

Sick! Love the Soviet decal. You may want to darken you pigments as you go down so they will match your shading scheme. You could always deal with it later too.
