Capital punishment

Are you in favour of capital punishment? If so, for what or under what circumstances?

If against - on moral or religious grounds, or for pragmatic reasons - is that an absolute or are there exceptional circumstances?

I voted no as i dont feel it should be in our hands to decide weither to kill someone or not, despite what the said person may have done, so i supose i voted no on religious reasons.

I also feel that life inprisonment can be worse for the person but also gives them a chance to ask for forgiveness and come to terms with what there actions have done. Although that might drive people insane knowing that you will have the rest of your life to think about it.

I voted no.

To use the example of a murderer; you\'re punishing them for killing someone. Because killing is wrong. So you kill them. How the hell does that make sense? ???

I find it pretty shocking that in today\'s supposedly civilised society capital punishment is still around at all. It pretty obviously doesn\'t even work as a deterrent, it tends to be simply a method of revenge, and there\'s the risk of killing innocent people. Crazy.

Yeah i just cant see the sense in it at all to be honest, the only reason i can see somebody wanting to do it is for revenge. Id be quite interested to hear why people think it should be legal or used?

EDIT: Hehe Bills avatar just changed from a middle aged man with a moustash to a teenage girl lol

yep, it doesn\'t work as a deterant.
a life of hard labour would, it would also give innocent people a chance to gain their freedom instead of an apology to their widow.

I\'ll have you know that middle aged man is the greatest miniature painter the universe has ever seen, and always will be. And she\'s 22 :p

Back on topic! I hope this thread will grow into a good debate. I like good debates.

Hurm.

I agree, it\'s not much of a deterrent.

Some people do deserve to die, however.

It is probably not justified, but it would give revenge to those who suffered.

I voted yes. Because i believe that some people deserve it. Ive seen \'friends\' of mine bragging in the boozurs about raping women or kicking the crap out of someone \"because they were asking for it\" Great excuse isnt it? They will probably write that one into the law books soon...its not \'diminished responsibility\' anymore, its now \'because they were asking for it\' The laws are getting so lax nowadays that Ian Brady would probably have been paroled if he were about nowadays!

Oh yea, i forgot to mention: I do have an agenda here. I was mugged 6 months ago but i resisted it, so my reward for that was to have my nose broken beyond repair (several kicks to the face)
I now cannot sleep for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time, due to the fact i cant, and probably never will ever be able to breath through my nose. I contemplate suicide about once a week, but never mind eh? Lets try to help the people who are committing these crimes eh? There lives must be so bad to make them do this in the first place eh? Poor people eh? HANG THE BASTARDS is what i say

I voted no. My main argument is that having the death penalty will mean the government putting innocent people to death. No I don\'t mean \"poor murders who had a hard life\", I mean innocent people who were wrongly convicted. Ah but we have DNA evidence and all sorts these days! Yeah but as long as you have humans in the equation who are fallible you\'ll end up with wrongful convictions, even now we get them. It\'s bad enough when they have spent a long time in prison before being released having done nothing illegal but can you imagine this with the death penalty? Bit late to turn back the clock. You can\'t argue that these are very few and far therefore it\'s OK. Very few and far between they may be but that\'s not the point. What if that wrongfully convicted person that was murdered by the state was you, your relative, your partner, your son...

Also it\'s been shown to not be a deterrent, is actually usually more expensive than life imprisonment (even where life literally means life). I am all for increasing some punishments but the idea that prison is easy is just a fallacy. I\'d like to see sentences for murder increased, but I just don\'t see any advantages to the death penalty.

\"Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?\"

Anyway I\'m not sure anymore if this kind of thread really adds to the CMON experience, so I will stay out of it henceforth.

In my opinion if one person kills another person on purpose they should be thrown in a pit with lions. People who drive drunk also deserve capital punishment.

I\'m not proud of my feelings towards it. But I am being honest. Like I said, it\'s not justified.

I tend to agree about the \'CMoN Experience\' as well. Sometimes these arguments are illuminating, but more often than not, they are just disheartening.

I\'m of two minds regarding it.

One is just like you say Davyboy. I do come here to escape.

The other, however, has gotten to know alot of these folks, and sometimes I crave deeper discussion with them. Besides, alot of the stuff like this that is discussed isn\'t brought up in \'polite\' society\', which makes it all the more interesting.

I\'ve been on both sides of this debate growing up and now feel I must vote yes -of course with some reservations.
Without due process, capital punishment would just be murder.
It\'s been argued a couple of time that it is not a deterent. And I agree. But then how is life imprisonment at hard labor a deterent to someone who will commit the crime anyway.
Someone esle said it is for revenge. What is wrong with that? For the victim and their families I\'m sure there is a grim satisfaction with executing the one responsible. But that\'s also why they aren\'t the one who get to decide.
I also agree that this is an odd topic for this forum, but I felt I had to put my 2 cents in.

Well a more interesting (not that I am don\'t like this) topic would be \"how do you view the world, society and the people that inhabit it\" perhaps. Because in the end that\'s what this question is about.

Cynical? Naive? Trust people in general? have faith in the other. Believe in evil/good? What happens after death?

That\'s where you\'ll find the real answers. The rationalisations aren\'t as interesting.

As for the question:

No. For moral reasons and the way I view the world.

I agree this is a wierd topic to find on this board, but whatever, it\'s a real slow day at work so I\'ll bite!

I live in Canada and we do not have capital punishment. I agree that it does NOT serve as a deterrent. I voted yes as I do support having the option on the table of executing prisoners. There are extreme examples of people who we can almost assuredly all agree deserve the ultimate punishment like Saddam Hussein who are unlikely to be able to fit back in with society, or worse yet have with their actions greatly altered society for the worse who are certainly not able to be rehabilitated.

Yes there are all sorts of problems, like killing people who are not ultimately guilty of their crime etc. but I think that for the most part if you find yourself on death row you\'ve probably made a series of really bad choices that have put you there in the first place. I don\'t think they\'re pulling random people of the streets and executing them. I\'m sure they\'re lots of examples of completely innocent people who\'ve been executed but out of the number of executions I am sure it is miniscule.

Some have said that they feel uncomfortable judging if another human should die or not. Fair enough. I honestly think I could do it without a problem.

In a near abstract way I think any time we vote for a government that wishes to expand military budgets and overseas action we do in our way sort of contribute to actions that will see people killed. Maybe that\'s a longhsot, and I do support my country\'s involvement in current and past overseas military actions.

The ONLY reason I am adding to this thread is that I am relatively new here but from what I have seen I have been greatly pleased with the level of adult behavior on these boards and I am genuinely interested in hearing from the people who post here.

Also as a side note, the responses I have read so far to this poll have been far LESS passionate and more moderate than anything involving a GW price increase. I\'m just sayin\'lol

On the issue of the deterrent value: depends what it\'s for.

I\'m one of those that think yes, but with conditions. With the difficulty of proving intent, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it\'s not a good punishment for murder and it has been shown to not be a deterrent.

I voted yes. It saves the state (taxpayers) a vast amount of money, and is the ultimate punishment for a crime (aside from what judgment God will make).

I think it should be allowed, only if it can be proven that the criminal is guilty beyond any doubt. Because once someone is dead you can\'t get them back, and that\'s too high of a risk to take if there\'s any potential that the suspect may be innocent. I would hate to see an innocent human be killed for a crime he/she did not commit.

It should only be used on murder cases (or something equally terrible), and only in cases where the court has direct evidence of the suspect\'s guilt (fingerprints, body fluid evidence, caught on video, etc). A verdict obtained only by witness testimony should not result in the death penalty because there is always the chance that the witnesses could be wrong/lying/misunderstanding/etc.

That\'s my two cents :)

-Matt
