cave terrain

I am planning to make a small diorama of a cave scene with an old Heritage (I think) shrieker and a Grenadier Myconid.

I want to make some stalagmites coming up from the cave floor, and wondered if anyone has suggestions about how best to do that without having to use a ton of GS.

You could use DAs which is an airdrying clay or milliput. Sculpy is fairly cheap as weel. Also you could make most of it out of styrafoam and coat it with epoxy or white glue.

could you use polystyrene.

or make a BIG armature and use a small amount of GS eg use skewers instead of paper clips for GStuffing the \'mites

Alot of the stuff I make, I will make 90% of it in wood blocks. Glue the whole structure together, sand/grind/file to the approximate shape and then put a layer of putty over that for the final shape and detail. You might try sharpening some dowels and putting GS over them.

For the final layering, you could slather a layer of PVA over them - stalagtites and mites are smooth - being composed of mineral deposits - usually calciums and carbonates...

For colours - feel free to use whatever you like - the oxides of different metals and compounds can have almost any colour you wish to name- especially if this is a 40k based diorama which could be on another world. - be sure to have pools and puddles near them for extra authenticity :)

ureathane foam (comes in cans from the home center for stopping leaks)

Not quite what you asked for, but lots of ideas here:

Thanks to all for the tips! I still have to paint one of the minis, but will get it posted when finished, or maybe a WIP when I get to the basing stage.
