I\'m not that good at NMM but what I can see it need more extreme highlights, more white to it... and I think it may be a bit too brownish.

From what I can tell, it looks a little too yellow to be convincing. Here are some tips:

1. thin your paints more. almost to a wash so that they are really transparent, this will let you have really good control over where color is going. It takes a good number of layers of the same highlight to build up color but it will be really smooth.

2. With the NMM, try not to wash the armor but try layering with some darker brown colors where shadow is. that will help keep the reflective parts shiny and the shadows dark as what we\'re trying to achieve is as high contrast as we can as smooth as possible. Where you placed your highlights is correct though.

3. Try to make it to a Games Day or another major miniature painting competition and just study the entries that place in the top three. Learning by observation is a great technique. Also, talk to some of the painters there to talk about techniques and bring some of your own minis and you might get some really good tips because you are right there with them. Enter too because judges will give criticism if you ask \"why didn\'t my entry place?\" they will help tremendously in guiding you to become a better painter.

hope all of that helps. keep it up!

looks good- but doesn\'t look like gold (hope that makes sense!)

the other two have hit the nail on the head- I think it needs more contrast (Darker browns in shadows) And more highlights and white \'hotspots\' where light would reflect.

First atempt: Failure, bigtime Failure.

Now, I could sugercoat that, but I wont.

The armor doesn\'t look like gold at all, it looks like cheese, and Celestine wouldn\'t where cheese to battle, now would she?

So, get back to the desk and start practicing, you have a long journey ahead of you.

What a tough guy!

It isn\'t that bad, just doesn\'t look finished yet. Push the highlights up to white and it will begin to look more reflective and gold like.

Tough? perhaps :p better honest than sticky honey-man, seldom do sugercoated criticism really reach all the way.

And yes, perhaps brighter reflections would help, but probably not as the shadows seems to be put in the wrong places. It would probably look like glossy cheese instead of just cheese ;)

I don\'t think it looks like gold, but then I dunno what sort of cheese you\'ve been eating Hygmer! lol

To me, it looks like varnished wood - which is quite an interesting effect IMO, but doesn\'t work that well for armour :)

I dunno if you can rescue it tbh, but well done for trying anyway.

I can tell you what colors I use for gold NMM but learning how and where to apply the paint comes with practice. Like matthew said, you need to water your paints down a bit more to get a smoother finish. Anyways, I start with Bestial Brown and add Bubonic Brown till I get a 75% Bestial/25% Bubonic. Now start adding white and keep bringing up the highlight until you have an almost pure white for the final highlight. Hope this helps and keep trying. If you have questions feel free to PM me.

The truth hurts the weak, helps the strong! Well I\'m not saying painters are strong, but you get the point. I agree on the first attempt. The advice given is good advice.

Its simply a wrong choice of colours...thats all. I think Antol and MathewBaich has given you some good advice. Constructive, non-sugar coated and put across in a sensible manner all at the same time. *whistles*

oh, another tip I got from Derek Schubert at reapercon is to start from a black undercoat. the paint will naturally develop a greenish hue and it is very interesting. so you might want to try that also if you want.

i think you may be able to acheive a more nmm style gold by going back and shading all of the recesses and natural shadow areas with watered down black paint, blending it into the base colour you have already used then take your highlights up a bit further towards white, all of the very topmost points should be a spot of pure white.

hope that helps, and good luck!
