Mmm, you could try drybrushing and then washing with either black ink or thinned down chaos black.

Paint it using grey(s) in exactly the same manner you would layer a fold of cloth. It works for me. Also try to keep your brush strokes running in the same direction. prevents clogging up the chainmail.
You can add washes of black & blue to the hollows as shadow areas to enhance the effect.

One other alteernative which drove me nuts when I did (and ended up crapping it thanks to a mediocre paint job on the rest of the mini) is to paint each and every link. Highlight from grey at the ends to light grey at the tip of the ring. Use lighter shades as you hit parts that would normally be highlighted if there was a flat substance.

Also as Dragonsreach mentioned, you can paint it like normal fabric which looks great as well.
