Chaos Lord with Jump Pack...

Hey there,

Been a while since I\'ve painted but thought I\'d share some WIP. I need some ideas on where to go next. It\'s strongly based of this one. It\'s also my first attempt at some basic OSL (see belt region). I think I need to shade the red down more, I worked up from Scab red to Blood, but I\'d like to make it less vivid.

Thanks for looking...

Looking good nice and neat and a nightmare model to paint.....

If you want to darken down the red you could try very thin glazes of green towards the dark areas .. Green darkens red down without dirtying it as much as some colours....

Are the claws where the osl is going to be??? if so remember not to shade the red too much towards where the osl will be... the nearer the light the brighter the red will be...good luck good start and look forward to seeing it progress....

Hey thanks,

I will certainly try the green for shading, I have a feeling it will work great. The OSL I mentioned is on the belt region, there\'s a larger picHERE . I like the idea of doing the claws although I\'m not sure I\'d do it justice...

well looking at how you\'ve done it on the belt region I think you could more than do it justice on the claws.. nice job....

Little more progress

So I decided to rework the red armour, it was just too bright. I highlighted up from Scab Red, adding a little Red Gore and Dwarf/Elf flesh to lighten. The green shading wash worked really well, its subtle which is what I wanted. I think I should glaze with some reds to bring back some colour, its a little washed out.

I reshot the pic with Fluro instead of Halogen lamps and that might not help the before/after effect, but I think its a better quality light.

Here is an updated shot with some more red glazes to the armour, highlighted the gold as suggested below and added some purple ink and red gore washes to the face. Also I took a clearer photo. (still finding my way lighting these little things!)

looking cool.. That there osl face is creepy and dark looking just right I like it....

one thing I have been doing to make my reds re pop is to use very dilute red and flesh ink mix.. Almost like water .. or that there new Baal red wash again thinned even more than it is n the pot.. really brings the colour back without losing the shading...

one thing that will help this piece currently is to pick ot a couple of the shapes on the gold of the armour by adding a lighter metal mx along the edges alost silver .. here and there just add a litle more dimension to them...

Also doing a couple of glazes of purple/red in the deeper recesses of the face area to bring that to life a little more... carefully applied just in the recesses....

keep it going

Looking really good so far, nice and clean and the detail is coming out great. May I suggest though when taking the pics putting him against a slightly darker background. The white is a bit over powering and makes the details harder to pick out. Try using a blue or even black background.
