Chaplain / Grey Knight Librarian

I'm slowly working on getting an 8 for a submission and just finished painting my terminator chaplain. It's painted using a red & white colour scheme to match with my grey knights to act as a librarian, even though the plate armour is painted black (the model looks so much better in black than silver).

Could use your advice on how to get a higher rating as it looks like i'll be lucky to scrape a 6 atm :/

I've been focusing on thinning my paints a lot on this model compared to those in the past and getting the shadow and highlighting right.

Just so you can see here's the last few submissions I've entered to compare to (they will all be in the same army):

I'd add more contrast to the lava, maybe thin the paint slightly more. Otherwise, it's definitely a step in the right direction

Actually, I think what the lava needs is for the rocks to have a reddish underglow.

But this is some very nice paint!

Thanks for the comments, the lava does have more contrast than shown in the photos, it could maybe be seen from a top down angle. I would really like to add a glow but I've only seen it done via airbrush and when I've tried it just looks messy like I missed the base and painted the rock. This is my best attempt at it: http://www.coolminiornot.com/311292 Any suggestions on how to get a good effect without an airbrush?

The thinning looks a lot better and you can't see any roughness in person like you could spot with my other work, but I noticed it looks a little rough on the skull and maybe the white areas in the photo so I'll keep working on that in the future but i'm a lot happier this time round!

Thanks for the tips! :)
