Cheap Winsor & Newton Series 7 Brushes

I just bought 3 Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes for 40 dollars including shipping! This I gues would mostly fit people in the US. I bought them off eBay for under 12 dollars each. The eBay store is The Pierce Company, a small photography joint that I guess has no idea what these brushes usually retail for! Just thought I should share this with some of you...

 Hope this helps some of you broke folks get your hands on the best mini brush ever...

Yep, thats a good price! Iv just bought 3 brushes from W&N\'s Cirrus range, and they are bloody excellent. W&N are well worth paying the prices for, for the quality that you get from them.

We got them here in poland for $10 each ;) in a paint shop. Great that somebody sells them at a reasonable price on ebay - these brushes rock , I have my No1 for more than a half year now, and I have to admit that it\'s indestructible! :p
I recently bought me a 0sized one too :D

I\'ve been looking at getting some W&N 7\'s, but I\'ve had to hold off.

Maybe someone could tell me if these are a good deal or not:

Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky

They smallest they have is 000, so I\'d probably have to look elsewhere if I wanted something smaller. Also, I\'ve never dealt with this company, so I can\'t say anything about how good they are.

Anyone have any input on this?

Yep, thats fairly cheap, i wouldn\'t go smaller than 0 personally, i use a mix of a 2 and a 1 for 99% of my painting and only use an 0 on the tinyest of details.
With them having such an accurate point you dont need tiny tiny sizes for detailing.

I still don\'t know what the difference between regular series 7 is and miniature series 7.

From the oft cited DickBlick.com:

Regular:
W&N S7 3/0 : $6.68
W&N S7 2/0 : $6.79
W&N S7 0 : $7.20
W&N S7 1 : $8.23

Miniature:
W&N S7 3/0 : $10.09
W&N S7 2/0 : $10.49
W&N S7 0 : $11.09
W&N S7 1 : $12.19

Pretty much the only brush I use anymore is a single W&N S7 size 0. I have some larger brushes that I use for large areas, but anything requiring accuracy gets the W&N.

the miniature line has shorter hairs.

i use a miniature line 00 for eyeballs and glare spots on the eye.

most of my other other painting is done with a w+n series seven 1

Well, right now I\'m using a 0 and a 3/0 that I got with a Reaper Learn To Paint Kit. I believe that they\'re nylon, but they\'re a lot better than the cheap ones I started out with.

With everyone singing the praises of W&N, I thought I should maybe invest in a couple. Don\'t know if they\'ll help my minis look any better, but they surely couldn\'t make them look any worse.

Since just about everyone that has these brushes say that they don\'t need the really small ones, maybe I\'ll go with just a 1 and a 0 and see how they do.

Thanks for the input all. Sorry if I hijacked the thread.

W&N Series 7 size 1 and 0 are the only brushes I use. Well not quite true, I have a few crappy brushes I use for bases, applying white glue, etc...

That\'s actually not that hard, unless you\'re used to paying full retail ;) Course it does depend on what size you purchased.

Personally I\'d recommend you try some other brands anyway, but purely on price Dick Blick is almost always the cheapest of the big-name online retailers. Dick Blick\'s page: http://www.dickblick.com/zz050/02/ and as you can see, there\'s no comparison.

With a good-quality Kolinsky brush you really shouldn\'t need anything smaller than maybe a 0 or 00 at the extreme. It\'s perfectly doable to paint a mini using a 1 and a 3.

Miniatures have shorter hairs and aren\'t as full in the belly. Personally I don\'t think they\'re a good choice for working with acrylic and vinyl paints as they hold less paint and this can make it more likely that the brush will dry out during use. And quite frankly they can tend to last less well.

For anyone that\'s interested: old thread on pF which mentions competing brands of Kolinsky brushes with some tips on how to check for quality:

I don\'t know if it\'s due to the air where I live, but i\'ve never had any trouble with the miniature W&N7 drying out, in fact I still feel like they hold too much paint sometimes!

Granted I live a block from the beach in a place where it doesn\'t get super hot much, so it might be due to my moderate, slightly humid air.

Personally I can\'t stand longer brushes, I feel like I lose all control, so I\'m really glad the miniature ones work for me.

PS: I never use smaller than a 1, even for eyes, etc...

Have to agree with Master Einion on the length of bristle. I like riggers, can\'t be doing with the lack of bend/give in shorter bristled brushes.

@hakoMike
you sure it\'s not the other way round?
Where i buy my W+N, the regulars are more expensive, cuz the hair is longer.

Yup, I\'m sure. According their website anyway. Next time I\'m in Germany maybe I\'ll check out Fredericus Rex. ;)

Even better than the W&N series 7\'s are Isabeys series 6227 pure kolinsky sable rounds.

and Raphaël Kolinsky Red Sable Pointed Round Brush Series 8404

I have to agree about the Raphael\'s. I was given one by a friend, and it has held up and been my bestest brush ever!!!

I\'ve used it for about 2 years now.

Man! You folks are seriously a wealth of information.

Think what I\'m going to do is get 1 each of the W&N, Raphaël and Isabey, just to get an idea of how they handle and all that.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I use W&N S7 and they work great for me.
Was going to buy some raphael (8400 and 8404) today to see how they held up since it\'s they other brush that keeps coming up about mini painting, but the art store guy told me quality had gone down the drain on those a while back when they sent the plant off to china. So just bougth W&N in the end :p
