Chicago and New York... What´s up?

Hi Di Ho!

Since my university is planning a kind of field trip to Chicago and New York I was wondering what I could see there concerning our wonderful Hobby...^_^...

It will be the time from 29.03. - 13.04.2008 ... I stay the second week in New York...

Too bad that there is no GD in this period... but maybe some other competition...?...

Of course general tipps for the Cities will be deeply appreciated...:)...

Typed in a hurry so please excuse the really poor spelling and/or typos.

In New York you need to...

Visit Ellis island, liberty island, macys, fao schwartz, central park (get a horse coach ride if going with female), try and find the national debt clock, see what\'s on at maddison square garden, go to the village and party until it\'s light... If you can, have a drink in a pub called the pig and whistle (It\'s not special but I got out of my skull there once), empire state building, bloomingdales, and if you can, get up really early and stand in front of the pointy building where they read the weather... no idea what it\'s called but it\'s right up by macys and then get the hell out of town before they drive you utterly nuts!

Chicago I don\'t remember much about because I was only there for a day but you can certainly go up the john hancock observatory and sears tower. I think that\'s about all I did... well that and eat a lot and drink more.

Chicago, Dang it I can\'t remember the name, but the museum downtown (Earth and Space?), the one with the sub in it. Almost need a couple of days to see it all.

Catch a show while you are in New York.

If you like aquariums, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is nice. If you like architecture, there is a boat tour that you can take that is nice - it takes you along the riverside of a quite a few cool historical buildings, and also a brief trip out into Lake Michigan. You must eat Chicago style pizza while there, and compare to the New York style pizza that you must also have!

Since I am in NYC I think I am marginally qualified to cover this part :p

Now if you are serious about hobby related joints you might want to visit \"The Complete strategist\" which is at 11 East 33rd Street (between Madison and Fifth Avenue) on Manhattan. This place is, btw very close to the Empire state building (you can visit it too, but be prepared to stay in line and pay for the privilege).

You can check their website http://www.thecompleatstrategist.com/index.asp?PAGEACTION=COMPANY
but it is only marginally useful and rather incomplete. They sell almost everything hobby and game related invented by
humanity.

Nearby there is another store called \"The neutral ground: Their website is here
http://neutralground.com/about.php. They just relocated to their new address and I haven\'t been there yet.

Also, in case you never heard there is a joint called Game workshop :bouncy:.

They have two stores in NYC.

One is in here - 54 East 8th Street on Manhattan. The area itself is very fun to walk around. The campus of New York university is just around the corner and there are a lot of small cafes and restaurants.

Withing a walking distance on 1-5 Bond Street there is huge Art store that I personally like - \"Blick Art Material\" You can check their web site here - http://www.dickblick.com/

Withing walking distance (but unfortunately in opposite direction on 828 Broadway and 12 th street there is, arguably the biggest book store in the world - The Strand. The web site is here - http://www.strandbooks.com/app/www/p/home/

The second one is in Queens at 71-59 Austin Street in Forest Hills. Here you can find biggest attraction in whole NYC - me. I often paint there, that is assuming this store is still open in April :(.

Other then this PM me and I will gladly provide some more conventional pointers or anything more specific that might suite your interests better.

Thanks for your answers, I really appreciate...:D...

@ squidders

I visited New York 2 times until now and I have seen some things on your list already... I will check those out, which I did not attend, I am sure that will be great...

I may have a Girl with me...:D... Hihi... Or I find a nice one there... They say the Girls in the US are fun...

I am very interested in some art exhibitions... last time (some 3 Years ago by now...) I visited nealy every Museum in Town... I will go to the National Museum of History, The Metropolitan, Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim... I am not sure about the Galleries... And there was a great Museum in New Jersey as well... some...

I would love some more info about Chicago, because I never went there and I am very curious... there will be a broad program from my University (Architectual...), but maybe someone knows something about Clubs, Nighlife and so on...:D... For New York as well...

@ mud duck

I think you might mean the MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY...?...

@ treide

Haha, all right, I will do that... I remember the New York one was good...

@ skeeve

I would like to compare the painting style in New York with the European one... the best would be to attend a Golden Demon, but there is none... I would love to see a good piece in real life while being there... Maybe it is possible somehow...:)...

I am not a friend of the gaming and stores like Games Workshop in general, I am more interested in meeting people who can paint nicely and talk to them about, well, this and that... this is all...^_^...

The Biggest Book store in the World... A Must...:)...

I may visit you while I am there, I send you a PM...^_^...

Maybe someone from Chicago can help me out a bit more... I have no clue about the City so far, just some things I know in general and the tipps I got from the Internet, but I am sure there is more interesting stuff (and it is best to be told by someone, some things you cannot read in any guide...:D...)...

In Chicago, the Field Museum is worth seeing (especially the Egyptian exhibits and the dinosaurs).

I\'m up in the north suburbs, so I don\'t spend much time in Chicago itself.

Chicago~
Museum of Science and Industry.
Shedd is okay, but it used to be better.
Definately try a Chicago Style Hot Dog. And if possible, gt it from a street-cart vendor, or a Mom & Pop establishment.

Thank you for all answers again... :)...

The Program from my university is very, very dense and I am sure that I will see all of that...:D... Hooray...

If you are going t do the Empire State Building then do it at night it is by far better looking out from the top and seing the lights and everything all lit than just the buildings during the day :) Alternatively I guess get to the top for sunset.

Statue of Liberty is also a long queue and I believe that now you are nolonger allowed to go all the way to the top :(

Luckily I was on both the Statue Of Liberty and the World Trade Center some 4 Years ago...:)... Ah, and on the Empire State as well... It was really nice... not ending view...
