Well I finally succumbed. After having seen Giganticdarks inspirational version of the Forgeworld marine I finally bit the bullet and got one myself.

Now I dont want to just leave it as is, it\'s just crying out to be converted in some shape and therein lies the problem.
There are so many options to choose from. I really like the Kantor image that is on the front of the \" Art of WH40K \" book, but then I thought oh what about a chaplain, or then again how about a librarian or what about.... aghhh the list of potentials is rattling around in my head with no clear winner. And don\'t get me started on which chapter to paint.

The only thing that is pretty clear in my mind at the moment is that I want the marine to be a loyal chapter and shown without his helmet on. And the pose will have to change.

Damn Giganticdark for all this stresslol

BTW if he wasn\'t on commission then Forgeworld should honour him in some way bacause I bet the sale of the Marine figure has increased rather a lot since he first started his WIP log.

maybe loken of the sons of horus, or garro of the deathguard?

well,if you wanna do a chaplain,i would recommend a skull helmet.

and if you da a librarian you HAAAAAAVE to do some really cool conversions.

a pre heresy thousand son would be nice as well.
the kantor artwork is great and the crimson fist colors would look great on a fw marine.
not sure about an imperial fist,too much yellow

This is more of a precursor to a WIP thread whilst I sort through ideas. The proper thread will follow later.

Well now.... after a certain amount of ponderance I think I have found the right candidate for the job. Apologies for the hyperlink but for some reason I can\'t access my blog page to upload suitable pics. Going to have to get that sorted before the WIP thread gets started. Anyway here it is...

Soul Drinker Librarian

The figure I feel has just the right amount of conversion work for me at this stage ie nothing to extravegant(sp?). The final figure will be different as there are details in the pic that are just not going to work and he\'s not wearing a backpack ??? But on the whole I want to get pretty close to what is shown. Not sure about the staff .... looks a bit weedy to me.

It\'ll be a while before I get around to actually working on him as I have GD entries to paint and a business to set up. Chances are that i\'ll start in Sept at some point and hope to have him ready for next years UK GD.

Getting info in advance .... has anyone tried painting this size figure with brushes or is airbrushing the way to go? If so then i\'ll need to get one and start practicing.

I have painted models that size with brushes myself(long time ago now though), I might not be the most skilled painter around but I have found the results satisfying.
In my opinion, the larger the model, the easier it is to hide what would\'ve been terrible on a smaller mini.
But if you\'re skilled with an airbrush? I\'d never touch areas that large with a brush ever again if I was, that\'s for certain.
But still, even if you\'re extremely good with the \"normal\" brush you wont get it to look airbrushed and vice versa so disregarding skill I\'d choose technique depending on what kind of feeling you want the model to have.
/end mind rant. lol

I got the FW Space Marine from my partner last christmas and all I have done is fondle and look at it. Then Ubers WIP came up and I was astonished! Since then 3 or 4 others have come onto cmon so mine is staying put for a while until things die down abit for the mini. Plus I get to see everyone elses great ideas :D

It would be really cool to see a variant to that marine, but as you\'ve said its pretty HUGE in terms of what you could do for it.

A librarian i think would be the hardest one to model, but would have the best results.

Though something pre-heresy would be just as if not more awesome, just because of the wealth of material, As aforementioned maybe one of the characters frm the novel series, garro, any of the mournival, emperors children would be nice and a bit different for painting. though i\'d really like to see a pre-heresy dark angel (or thousand son).

As for painting it, brush work would be a very long process in my eyes and would be easier to mess up, say whith having to remix paints should they dry etc, but i would say if you havent airbrushed before to give yourself some good practice beforehand so your in full control.

Have you decided what techniques you will use? As much as i love giganticdarks it would be nice to see one maybe in an \'old school\' style.

Seeing so many makes me tempted to buy and get in on the action myself

if you intend to do sarepedon of the soul drinkers you could go completely bonkers and do him post mutation chaos defiler/soulgrinder legs as base componants coverd in the epoxy of your choice to make them more organic though i do believe he lost at least one leg and had a mechanical replacement, might do this myself:drunk:

At the moment my sculpting skills are still quite basic so I will stick to the style of the image as that is more component/conversion based and as such is more in line with what I want to do.

As for painting style, again I will probably stick more to the image as that is my prefered style, just look at my Gallery:D
However being on a larger scale it means that I can incorporate dirt tracks and chips on the edges of the armour to give a slightly worn look. I am currently experimenting with water effects so that may find it\'s way on to the base. The larger size might also enable me to pull of an effective lightning effect using fine wire that you can\'t do with the 28mm minis.

Does anyone know where I can get a more suitable sized head that can be converted (UK)? I wouldn\'t be to fussed if it had hair or not.

Thanks for the comments regarding airbrushing. I may well have to look into it. Has anyone tried the GW one? Or is that just asking for scorn and derision???

I have and am using the GW one. It is rather good for one that cheap but I wouldn\'t go for details with it so to speak. I use it instead of spray cans when I want \"that\" color for large areas and need to mix it myself.
If you plan on using the airbrush extensively I recommend you buy a \"real\" one.

But it is really nice for large areas so if you plan on spraying the main colors with it and go for the brush for highlighting and detailing there\'s absolutely no reason to not get it.

there was apost fairly recently on the forums with one of the big marines and i believe he had replaced the head unfortunatly i cant recal the name of the guy, worth a browse if you need it badly
