Speak for yourself, non-Chicago area Boy!:D

Just stay out of the suburbs! Any city in the US that\'s big enough to have ethnic neighborhoods is pretty cool. And don\'t forget that the small towns in rural areas have that \"local color\" thing going on. i try to stay away from areas that are full of minimalls and chain restaurants. :|~ That is what a cultural wasteland is, in my opinion!

I\'ve only been to the USA once, and I visited DELAWARE of all places (a woman was involved). Land of Denny\'s, big box stores, parking structures and homogenous suburbs. However... I know not everywhere is like THAT. However I can imagine that many... \"heartland\" areas might have limited appeal to anyone who craves a multicultural experience.

@penguin - your photos are amazing. The orchid mantis is particularly impressive. You definitely have an eye for the beauty of minute things, but then again, everyone on this site must have a spark of that, right?

@matthewbaich - I guess it depends on what floats your boat. If you want unlimited choice in restaurants, symphony, museums and the like, then you better head to one of the major US cities, and be prepared to deal with traffic, crime and pollution. I think any place in the US has its allure, though. Don\'t sell a place short just because it is a smaller city or rural - some of the most interesting people and places are \"out in the boonies\". Just adjust your expectations to suit your environment.

Sounds like you had a good time bill. :)
More eventful than our holiday in france, although we saw quite a lot of lizards, along with countless buzzards and big birds that like tearing heads off small creatures, although no geckos unfortunately. :(
