Citadel finecast

Hi all, I hope you are well. I did conduct a search on the forum but was unable to find my answer so I was wondering if someone could help. I am going to paint my first finecast miniature tomorrow but I wanted to know what preparation is required before I spray it with Army Painter white primer, I have already soaked it in water with a little drop of soap in. Is there anything else I need to do in preparation for spraying? I really don't want the paint to be easily chipped. Thanks in advance.

thanks guys, just noticed a miscast on the mini this morning actually, they eyes are hollow - i.e. there are none. Sigh. I am going to get a replacement today, good job i didnt take it off sprue. Though I did lose the packaging - think GW will exchange it anyway?

Well the first batches were awful, saw some much improved ones last time I was to my LGS with very little flash. The storemanager said that the quality of the finecast was improved with each new batch. I still would be very careful when selecting finecast miniatures though and not buy boxed sets for a while if you can't have a peek inside. If it's a good cast I find the material really nice to work with.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I was lucky to get a later run of Vlad, and there weren't any real issues. The cockatrice, which was in a box, was in good shape too. However, I saw an earlier Vlad that was a mess, and several Konrads that had miscasts.

Ok thanks all. I exchanged the spellweaver for a better cast one, and have sprayed her white now. I am finding that the paint is very easy to flake off. Has anyone else found this with finecast ?

It's resin, so it's probably got lots of release agent on it, which tends to reduce the adhesion of paint. Did you scrub off your fig fully with soap and warm water? If not, this might be the cause of the paint flaking.

Something else to do may be to do the scrub, then blast the fig with some Dullcote before priming or undercoating.

Hi gohkm, thanks for that but I actually did wash the mini prior to priming, I didn't varnish it first though. Ought I have done?

It's a personal choice, sometimes Dullcoate, makes the type of resin a lot easier to work with, sometimes it doesn't.
My Personal experience was that even with scrub of Soap and water the material still felt "waxy" tried the dullcoate dusting and all I got for the effort was patches of uncovered resin, akin to it being primed in the rain.
Ended up dropping in Dettol overnight and then re-washing, hit it with Grey Automotive Primer and got a much better result, ready to paint.

ok thanks again all. I have to say, though the detail on the resin is superb - I am not overly impressed with the new range at this stage. I will be writing to GW to express my concerns as I am sure I am not the only one who has suffered "miscasts", paint flakes and other inconveniences. Thanks all.
