Citadel paint bottles S...!!!

Ok Ok, everybody knows that but I will feel better if I post my opinion :
CITADEL new paint bottles ARE A BIG PIECE \'O SHIT !!!
GAMESWORKSHOP MARKETING DUDES are MASTER THIEVES !!!

The new paint bottle is fancy and looks as big as the old flip top ones, COOL...
but wait :
- half of the volume is the cap !
- I bought 2 skull white ones -just in case- and... Ohhh :
the second one dried before I could use it...
- I decided to buy a new one and transfer it in my old flip top :
surprise !! you can house 2 new bottles in one old !
- I tried -just to check- the Prince August range : 50% more paint for the same price...
(by the way I would like to say that Vallejo and Prince August are the same stuff )

Conclusion : benefits for GW must have increased by 400%, but I wasted my cash !
And that\'s a pity for Citadel paint is quite good otherwise.

I think that we could send them mails to protest against this product :
perhaps, if some of the top painters around tell them how they feel, things could change !!!
;)

Blue Bottles

Agreed: The new bottles suck. They hold less paint. They don\'t keep as good a seal as the old flip-tops, hence they tend to dry out more easily. AMine usually dry out before I can finish the bottle.

Disagreed: Citadel will not change their ways to please the customer. At least not until their business starts hurting.

Answer: Buy Vallejo Paints! They\'re better quality, and come in a much better dispenser. Nuff said.

The other good alternative is to buy Pro Paint from Reaper, that is what I am using now and I am very impressed, and for those in Europe the old GW paint line is out there by another manufacturer, and I wish I could get my hands on it. My old GW paint are still usable many years after the fact. I just do not remember the name of the company that puts it out.

Future of GW paints.....

Well according to the manager of our local official GW store they are planning on going back to the old flip top bottles. I do hope this is true!!

I\'ll tell ya though. Invest in some of the plastic dropper bottles that were posted here the other day. you can put your Citadel paints no matter what the original container in one just like the Vellajo paints. very nice

Citadel Paint Pots, and their future...

Hey guys,
I have heard that once GW\'s contract with their current paint supplier is up, they will be returning to the old supplier from the previous line (which I have been told by several store owners produces Coat d\'Arms). Also, on kind of a funny note, as revenge, the current supplier sent out a bunch of GW white primer bottles filled with gold spray instead (Talk about assholes).
Anyway, that\'s my take on it... and the only colors I have problems with drying out are the ones I use a lot (DA green, Chaos black, SKull white, Boltgun Metal)...

Let me count the ways that GW paints are not my choice.

#1 Funtionality: The paint is gritty the more it is thinned in water. I still use the older paints because they are of a better quality.

#2 Price per Ounce: need I say more.

#3 Presentation: Bottle type is lacking, in order to get any paint on a pallet I have to get on the brush first. This defeats the entire reason for having a pallet.

#4 Crusting / Air Leakage: Assuming you do use these paints the tops crust closed. You lose paint this way, plus it becomes very difficult to reopen the bottle if you closed it all the way. I have know guys that carry pliers just to re open their bottles.

#5 It supports Greed Workshop: I have issues with a company that sticks it to their loyal customers every couple of years.

Yes but you\'re still using their older paints so what are you complaining about then? ;)

ETA on new..I mean old Paint Pots??

Does anybody know when GW is going to go back to the old style paint pots? I\'ve asked my local game store, but since they aren\'t an offical GW store, they\'ve been left in the dark. Any news on this would be greatly appreciated.

I hate the new ones, I play dark elves and i\'ve dried out about 3 bottles of purple and blue. I used my blood red once for blood stains, went back about 3 weeks later to use it and it was dried out too. :flame: I\'ve been using the paint pots posted on another forum since.

Agree agree agree. The pots SUCK. I only buy them so I can dump them into dropper bottles because, unfortunately, I do really like the color and chemistry of them.

I have used GW-paint for over a year now and have completely switched from enamels like Humbrol-Revell-etc to GW. Over time I have picked up a few tricks to handle bottle problems.

- stash the bottles upside down, the paint forms an air-tight seal and prevents drying up, it also makes it easier for me to find the right color in my paint tray.
- often a handkerchief or paper towel is enough to get enough grip to open those stubborn bottles.
- if that doesn\'t work, hold the bottle upright in your hands, between the palms, and crunc the top. you\'ll hear the dried up paint crack. then try opening again.
- for mixing paint on a seperate palet, I use toothpicks to \'lift\' a drop of paint out of the bottle. They come cheap an can be used again (preferably for the same color of course).
- usually I don\'t stir the paint before use, I just vigorously shake the pot before opening.
- I always have a spare of my favourite and most used colours. In my case: black.

I had a set of those old paints, but they didn\'t work for me. Like, three layers of old black didn\'t cover like one layer of new black.

That\'s all I can think of now.
Maybe someone can add a few more tricks.

Don\'t quote me on this but last I heard they would be out in the spring. They are the same bottle design with a similar screw on cap but the cap now incorporates a flip-up section in the top. The good news is that you will no longer have to unscrew the cap to get to the paint. That should help prevent drying paint significantly. Whether the flip-top will seal any better is, of course, yet to be determined but I think that it should. At least you won\'t need pliers to open the bottles anymore!

According to the Games Day reports, the lids are made out of a softer plastic than the current lids. They are much better at forming a tight seal that way. It sounds like the middle of the lid will flip up like the old school paints. Hard to get a clear image of it in my head, but it sounds like it could work. The best of both worlds sort of thing.

Haven\'t heard anything about the dates, but apparently the bottles only have to pass the low pressure test (to survive sitting in a cargo hold of a plane flying over the Atlantic to get paint over to North America) and they will get the seal of approval. Can\'t be too far off if they pass.

And as for the paint suppliers changing, I really hope that they are able to keep the colors the same after the transition. I know I would be royally pissed if one half of my army was a slightly different shade from the rest...

Paints?

The paints I\'ve been using for the last year and a half are Jo Sonja\'s acrylic gouch. 75 mml
for about two bucks a tube. They last forever, paint doesnt dry out, can be squeezed right on to your pallette... They rival Vallejo for opaqness, lightfastness, heavy pigmentation and they dry with a matte satin finish...I really cant say enough about these paints...You should give them a try...

I have used GW products since i started painting way back in the eighties, and i worked for the companies stores in the early nineties, but the quality of the paints just gets worse. The current pots are absolutely terrible, specially the ink range which just seem to leek as you open/close them.
i use \"miniature paints\" as a brand because they are a much better quality and for inks i try to use \"windsor and newton\" artists ink.
BUT......if GW are returning to their old producer, all for the good, just put more paint in the pots or drop the prices.

If you are having a problem with GW inks leaking, there is an easy solution to that. Never, under any circumstances, shake the pot! If possible hold it as level as you can to keep any ink from getting in the lid. This is what I have been doing lately and there have been no problems. Another idea might be to take a straw and suck up and spit out some of the ink. If it\'s not as full, it\'s not as easy to spill. Just be careful not to get any in your mouth :|~

I use alot of Apple Barrell craft paints and they work fine for me plus you can get the bottles on sale for .59c a bottle. I also use Acrylic tube paints and they work great too. I like GW paints, but for me the cost is too much for what you get.
