Classic Ogre repaint

Ok, many years ago I owned an ogre mini from the Citadel monsters boxed set but had to sell it because someone offered me money. I missed that mini and have recently managed to find a replacement thanks to my other second home - Ebay. Unfortunately, I was too lazy and impatient to strip it and have started to repaint over it\'s old paint job - luckily the quality detail does not seem to be suffering because of this.

Anyway, here\'s how it looked when I bought it...

...not bad.

So far I have repainted:
- the skin (dark flesh, dark flesh with fortress grey, tanned fleash and tanned flesh with fortress grey) I wanted a ruddy/outdoorsy skintone
- the club (basecoat and ink wash, still need to highlight and redo the studs)
- the fur jacket which, on a whim, I decided to make a tiger skin (vermin brown/snakebite leather base, chestnut/brown ink wash, highlighted by adding blazing orange then watered down chaos black for stripes)

What think you so far? Also, I\'m hoping to do something special with the base. This is a special model for me as it\'s one of the first I ever owned so I want it turn out great - any suggestions for model or base would be very much appreciated.

Totally got me...I dunno!
I would really have stripped it before re-painting it though. Still, its hard to tell the bits youv\'e done even with the guide lol

I agree with TBS he poor picture quality you cant tell what the difference is normally Cellulose thinner does the job nicely the old version looks nice but I would like to see the new version without a finger

Yes, I know I should have been more patient and stripped the ogre (ooer missus) but I have very little time and wanted to get on with the job in hand (ooer missus again). As for picture quality - its an ongoing struggle but I\'ll try to get some better pics soon if you\'ll bear with me

These old ogres are great, much better than their newer cousins.
Billy, You should have stripped the bugger, especially if it\'s special to you.
Not alot to say about what you\'ve done so far (bad pic etc.nice clean fingers though)
Personally I\'m not into tigre skin, (clashes with my complexion) Although if you pull it off well enough I might be forced to change my opinion.
As for the base, I dunno either, try to do something in line with the narrative the mini suggests, (he\'s got his bag of limbs right.
The mini\'s so good, I\'d keep the base relatively simple, maybe just raise him, put him at the top of three or four stairs, looking like he\'s about to go down into the larder.....

Hmmm, I am tempted to keep it quite simple now as I\'ve started building a collection of classic ogres and may eventually get around to bringing them all together somehow. The steps idea is good - want something a bit different from slate and skulls but not to difficult to make as I\'ve not got much experience with basing.

As before, the bits I\'ve done are the skin, the tiger striped jacket and the club (still needs work).

I\'ve also repainted the bag, belt and straps.

Are these pics any better?

I think doing the tiger stripe jacket was a poor choice. It has nothing to do with quality, it just blends in too much with the surrounding figure now. Something light, not in the brown family, would of been a better choice; perhaps Zebra or White Tiger striped? The skin also could use at least one more level of highlights. I know pics always kill most of your highlights, unless you are also an ace photographer, and thats why you sometimes have to over-highlight. I think painting those green circles on his chest as gems would be cool too, and you can use the base color you already have there.

Repainting is tough, especially OVER an existing painjob, but it could be a good learning experience as well.

P.S. - I\'m not trying to come off all full of myself, I happen to paint like crap. But since part of what I do for a living is design, I have a good eye for color and style.

Love the hair that you have done on the lad, but I would agree with Markus another highlight on the obvious points on the skin will just enhance the good work you have done to date.

What are those disc\'s on his jacket anyway?

Thanks guys, I\'m always wary of overdoing highlights but think you\'re right about needing them if the photo is going to look any good. As I said, the tiger thing was just an impulse (not necessarily a good one) maybe I\'ll redo it when the rest of the model is finished.

Target, thanks for your comment on the hair but I haven\'t actually painted that yet :redface:

As for the discs, I assume they are meant to be metal, like large studs in leather??? but the gem idea could be interesting...

Well, after a long wait (for me anyway) here\'s the latest.

Most of him is done now with just his belt pouch and feet to tackle. The rest may need more defining highlights, washes etc (especially the club) but what do you guys and gals think?

and yes, the forhead and eyes do have a resemblance to flea.

Love these old skool ogres. Much more character. I\'ve got about 8 I need to get around to painting. Personally I would have stripped it as the paint appeared to be quite thick at the start.

But fair play to you, doing a good job there. I\'m not sure about the tiger stripes as the sculpting you have done it on is actually modelled as fur and seems too indented.

Like the Flea comparisons though. How about doing some more Ogres as the rest of the RHCP\'s. A big plus to anyone who can do that especially with the sock photo!!

@Faulkns - thanx, I had that thought about the fur being too thick for tiger skin after I started painting it but then rationalised that it was from a shaggy sabre-tooth tiger that the ogre ran into in the mountains. I love giving my minis a back-story while I paint them

Looking good so far, had a few thoughts that may help or interest you.

My Grandad has a real life tiger skin on his wall, and has had it for, well, since before I was born! This is much lighter in colour, and is more a sandy yellow than orange. A very VERY fine drybrush of bleached bone could help lighten the colour, as well as help show the texture (Although IRL this is very smooth and nearly identical to a domestic cats fur- Yours works ok though as this is a fantasy piece, and a mountain sabretooth would have thicker fur as said.)

The green bottle on his back is cool, but you could try a couple of green glazes and maybe even a coat of gloss Varnish to help it look like glass.

IRL wood has shades of green and grey to it (if you get the chance have a good look at a tree or branch) A green and grey light glaze would help with a more realistic looking club (check out the Giant in my gallery for an example) Again, not a major issue as it is a fantasy piece and not real life.

any thoughts on the base yet? I feel a rocky snow scene would work well and help the narrative- ie killing a shaggy furred mountain sabre tiger.

Just some ideas, hope they help.
