Cleaning resin minis

Until now I have mostly painted metal or plastic minis. Having ordered a few resin models lately (forgeworld), I was wondering what do you use to clean them before painting?

Ok, now how about removing stubborn paint that\'s been there for a while. I sprayed a FW Thunderbolt, waited a few months, then decided I didn\'t like it. I tried simple green and the model grew a mouth just so it could laugh at the attempt. I dare not try anything stronger, but I really want this paint removed.

You could try acetone, if you have some offcuts or something you dont care about. Ive used it on resin FoW minis and it worked fine, but Id test it before use on something as $$$ as a Forgeword mini!

I tried that on a resin sprue bit from FW (came with the daemoclese rhino) and it melted it. I left it in there for about 3 hours and when I took it out the paint was still on but the whole piece was floppy. It reminded me of that scene from X Men where that Congressman was turned to jello.

if you are in the states, try getting hold of \"super clean\" (there are a couple varieties of it, you will want the \"tough task\" kind). this comes in a giant purple jug, and can be found in the auto dept. at wal-mart stores. This stuff cleans plastic and forgeworld resin, does not harm it at all. i have yet to have a problem with this chemical, even after soaking things for weeks at a time.

Maybe just dip it in acetone - brush off what comes loose and then rinse in water. Repeat until its all gone. 3hrs seems excessive, I can usually get really thick paint of 2nd hand minis off after 5 mins.

I submerged an entire FW model in a bucket of full strength Castrol Superclean overnight and it stripped it clean with no softening.

As for cleaning models. Clean the mold lines like metal with a knife and files and sandpaper.Id reccomend a dust mask and do it somewhere where you can get the dust. resin dist gets everywhere.

Wash the entire model well with hot soapy water. I use a grease cutting detergent for dishes. The mold release for resin casting is commonly made from a parafin wax based material.
