Cloak pattern?

I\'m about to paint the cloak of my space marine commander, but I can\'t come up with a good pattern/freehand!

Nothing too elaborate (he\'s meant for gaming), otherwise I\'m open to suggestions!

you can\'t beat a nice stencil type mperial eagle. simple effective and not OTT

Ultramarines; regal blue blended to ice blue. Going for an oldschool style (no battle damage etc.)

The imperial eagle was a good idea! I\'m just wondering how to do it on a \"folded\" cloak, seeing that I am not that good at freehand..

you don\'t need to do the feathered wing bling version just the standard stencil version will work . keeps it simple and easy enough to break into painting shapes.

Practice on paper first if you don\'t feel confortable. You can then fold the paper and see how the folds work.

I prefer doing it straight on the mini but in different steps.

I\'ll first apply a neutral yet dark color to plan the motif. I\'ll then go over it with brighter colors till I get to a final effect that suits me.

Do you fully shade and highlight the area before applying the freehand?

This is what has intimidated me from freehand for so long. I am afraid of ruining an area that i spent so much time on shading or highlighting.

I do, otherwise I\'d find it a nightmare to shade and highlight once the freehand is painted.

If you don\'t know about it, you should lookup negative painting. It can help you touch up the details of the freehand and get thinner lines.

Some really nice models there green stuff! Layering works best for me too. To be honest, I have difficulties imagining any other method of comparable versatility! Wet blending etc only works well on specific surfaces.

Actually, I didn\'t mean layering as in the \"Layering\" technic. But more like applying from dark to light colors instead of starting of with a light base.

For me, light colored mistakes on a dark background will show up immediately, so the less I apply light colors, the less the mistakes will be spotted.

I\'m not sure that reads out right .

A simple Line done neatly and with a shadow line below it always looks \"classy\" on mini\'s especially tabletop ones.
