Do you fully shade and highlight the area before applying the freehand?
I do, otherwise I\'d find it a nightmare to shade and highlight once the freehand is painted.
If you don\'t know about it, you should lookup negative painting. It can help you touch up the details of the freehand and get thinner lines.
But I prefer the layering method I described. That\'s how I did these :
