Cloning in Photoshop

I work a lot with Photoshop and am very aware of how it lets you monkey around with reality. Sometime I wonder if it’s gone too far. Let’s not look at all the battle shots where Josef Bugman is simultaneously fighting people at six different points, let’s pick on a new release photo with sneaky shopping.

“Oh, that’s a lovely picture of a pair Dark Eldar Beastmasters Curis. What’s your beef Curis?” I hear you say. “They’re obviously different, look at the markings on the skyboard.” And, well, you’re partially right. It’s not a straightforward cloning, as they’ve put in effort and taken two photos of the same model from different angles, and shopped out/in the skyboard marking.

The dead giveaway is: the end of the whip. The one on the right has no barbed end, and goes weirdly transparent.

Cloning/cheating happens. I won't dispute that but in this case it isn't cloned. Don't know about the end of the whip but if you will notice the round thing that the chain is connected to is in one pic behind the whip and the other it's clearly visible. The 'wings' have slightly different perspective.

If I notice it, it bothers me :D Some of the shots in WD are awful for it, one, I think on a back cover, of a long roadful of dwarves receding into the distance. They didn't even swap about the figures in the front rank of each unit!? I don't mind the cloning bit, just put some effort in to disguise it :D

Cheers, B.

yea I think so too, I had a good look at these two images, the whip end's a dead give away, I also suspect that the one on the left might be a WIP? then the one on the right is a final? even all the darklining bits are the same....

and yea, it's a business, I understand the need for cloning, perhaps need to rush for the deadline or something, just do a good job at it

Go Crawl up your own ass and die already, the public don't have much more blood to give. Surely.... You have turned this happy , jovial, unique market into a commercial exercise devoid of any real feeling, not even a FRACTION of what was. Enjoy.

PS. I hate you. If the feeling wasn't clear already. I'm sure if I slipped you a 20 for a nod, you would acknowledge the sentiment.

This was my best attempt at a child friendly response.

Drown your sorrows, mate.

The cloning issue annoys and makes me jubilant at the same time. I used to think I was a complete failure for taking MONTHS to churn out a decent looking army. Knowing that GW staffers are cheating to meet deadlines makes me feel like less of a failure. On the other hand, damn you for making me feel less competent all those other times!

The sad fact is along with the modelers/painters being low-paid and not having enough time to do effective jobs, I'm sure the graphics people are under the same constrictions as well. Sometimes this happens. Sad, a bit embarrassing at times (happens to all of us!) but not out of the ordinary. Check out http://www.psdisasters.com/ if you really want to do some head shaking.

old rackham had those too. For example the Cynwall elf ragnarok game in CH5 or 6. The bases were suspiciously the same in 3s/8s depending if the figure was released 3 to a blister or 8 to a box.

I really don't see this as an issue. So they want consistancy for their army shoots?

THey are just showing off their product, and want to display it in the best possible light.

Every company out there does it, from McDonalds to Old Navy.

There is no shame in it.

Sure there is. You see that awesome Marine company shot in the back of the codex? Looks impressive, no? Too bad it's really probably just a tac squad and a land raider, and a liberal dose of the clone tool. As the comic points out, if THEY can't be arsed to paint an army, what hope do we have? LOL

Photoshop..........it can be your friend, or your enemy. Let the user beware.

I....really don't see the problem with that. If you expected a studio to paint that many miniatures then I think your expectations are a little high. It's supposed to be a representation of what a whole hold looks like going to war, not an average army.
I amused myself years ago by picking up the new 3rd edition Imperial Guard codex, flipping through the pages and trying to count how many iterations of the same Cadians unit I could count and trying to figure out how many models had been there originally.
Never really saw a problem with them taking twelve great painted miniatures and turning it into 200. Still great looking, and the picture is still inspiring (and not just inspiring you to buy more).
It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the different painted camouflage examples in the guard codex was all photoshop, and certainly wouldn't fill me with as much venom as I see here.

They can be arsed to paint an army, in fact many of them have personal armies that they paint in their free time. GW used to make a big thing about their people bringing their personal armies to the table on lunch breaks and playing. Just about every army book in 3rd edition 40k had two armies personally painted by people in the studio as well as conversions and single miniatures. Recently all the pictures shifted solely to a "studio quality painted army" and the WD battles as well.

However what they are showcasing is not their personal armies, they're the studio army and painting more than one of each for an army that's unlikely to go anywhere but in a picture online or on a box is a waste of the painters time when they have dozens or hundreds of new boxed sets to paint up before they get release, before they get sneak peak-ed, and before the codex/army book/box art goes to the printers.
