Clown Bust

Decided to sculpt a bust. Hoping that the larger scale will help me develop my skills.

Quick concept sketch:

Early sculpting progress:

I'm using a Green Stuff / MagicSculp mix and have recently moved to using Vaseline as a lubricant (previously used tap water).

My clowns are always friendly! :-D

The jesters hat is looking rather like Satan's horns!

The underpinning is currently segmented to allow further shaping of the armature when the putty cures. The hat will probably have four tails in total and I'm considering either bells or skulls at the end of each...

As much as i am crapping my pants, I would actually be interested in painting this one once it is for sale :) Now if you'll excuse me, i have to go do some laundry... :sidefrown:

Wow, this is looking great. But it looked more clown-like before you sculpted the nose. Are you just sculpting that for practice and will put the ball nose on later, or leaving it as a regular human nose?

Thanks guys :)

The nose is currently just the underpinning and is not finished. I'm undecided as to whether it will be a clown nose or a crooked Mr Punch nose. Once the clown collar and jesters hat are sculpted it will be unmistakably a clown!

I've been working on a piece of concept art. This will be included as a limited edition art card and should also help me to visualise the remaining steps of the sculpture. I hope you like it!

Thanks guys! I'll hopefully have some sculpting progress to share next week or so. Last night was my first session in over 5 weeks, so just getting back into the swing of things. I wish I had prepared the concept art before sculpting... The jesters hat appears to have suffered from a lack of direction. Nothing I can't salvage without a bit of carving and shaving mind you :)

Progress! Plenty of corrections to make, details to build on etc... At some stage I will remove the head again as I want to change the angle of the neck.

Apologies for the lack of updates on this one. Preparation for Aprils Salute convention has been very demanding of my time! I've recently started a video blog and the latest installment touches briefly on this bust. It's also worth a look as I share the limited edition art card that will accompany its cast!

Thanks MrJim! I really need to get back to work on this. I've been taking something of a break since the Salute convention in April. Having said that I've done a couple of illustrations and started a new chibi sculpt. All for fun mind you so nothing new and clown related as of yet!
